Providing Feedback | Researched-Based Strategies | Focus on Effectiveness | Leader of Pedagogy | Scoop.it

Providing the right kind of feedback to students can make a significant difference in their achievement. There are two key considerations. First, feedback that improves learning is responsive to specific aspects of student work, such as test or homework answers, and provides specific and related suggestions. There needs to be a strong link between the teacher comment and the student's answer, and it must be instructive. This kind of feedback extends the opportunity to teach by alleviating misunderstanding and reinforcing learning. Second, the feedback must be timely. If students receive feedback no more than a day after a test or homework assignment has been turned in, it will increase the window of opportunity for learning. Feedback is a research-based strategy that teachers, and students, can practice to improve their success.

The challenge is in providing timely feedback spread across 3-4 courses with 25+ students each. Nearly impossible with writing intensive programs, which is a majority of doctoral programs. Sink or swim!

I suspect critical thinking predates the Ancient Greeks. Without critical thinking, humans might not have gotten to that point in history. A great take away from the article is the importance of questioning. A second take away, perhaps hidden away, is the importance of questioning what we think critical thinking is and is not and engaging in conversations.

The global movement for economic justice relies considerably on policy analysis and research conducted by hundreds if not thousands of academics researchers and scholars. ?Our consequences of the changing power relations in today's world is that there is more room in the public sphere for the affirmation of collective values and principles, experience proves that an informed public opinion can be powerful today, and can change governments public and international agendas. Again Churches are challenged to make use of this opportunity. They need to read the signs of time and to make their voices heard by responding to peoples cries for justice and dignity, and by speaking truth to the powers- whoever and wherever their may be. ?Christians do not have ready made answers and solutions to propose. The Bible offers guidelines (love, sharing, justice for the poor) but does not defined one "Christian" economy or "Christian" politics. ?Churches and Church related organizations can initiate public debates and largely use media means to reach a broader constituency, furthermore, regional thematic discussions can be facilitated with the ecumenical family. The second paragraph begins with the line "things have changed." In response, I would say the more things change the more the stay the same. The important point in the article is engaging teachers in a conversation and asking them to be part of the solutions not for now, but for the future. We have too many experts stating imperatives rather than engaging in conversations, asking questions, and listening.

In this post Jackie Gerstein states "to fully understand the purpose of school, the history of its evolution as an institution needs to be understood." After this is discussed she provides refers to an article that discusses "how to bring our schools out of the 20th century."

The next section shares quotes from a wide range of people on schooling. Three are below.

It is sheep following a fashion so that they can appear innovative. GAU is, as me, in reprocessing and restructuring. I do believe that love and freedom will be created, but we have to be patient.

I enjoyed making instructional videos for my students and letting them make them as well.  This article covers why we should not be hung up on having a polished video because shorter, less formal videos can be more effective.  I used the app Explain Everything on my iPad to record lessons, but there are some who say that having the teacher in the video is more effective.  I wasn't ready for that.

After describing the three phases of the learning process based on cognitive science. The first two phases:

* Students decide what to attend to.

* Students organize the information

These work with short term memory but to know the information students must also activate long term memory which may begin in class with a review but should also includes well crafted assignments.

What can you do?The post continues by exploring ways to capture a students attention and ways to help them create a framework. The final section explores how to make the lesson stick. Three examples are below (quoted from the post).

* Begin lectures with a high level question that the upcoming information can answer.

* Highlight the "unfinished" nature of each subject.

* Don't use too many types of different presentation materials at once.
