Debra Walker's curator insight, March 6, 2014 4:23 PM

I recently read an article that was describing corporate culture as lunch provided everyday & free beer on Friday.  If you take away those superficial connections for an employee - which are merely non cash components of a compensation plan and not a long term contributor to organizational culture - an engaged employee will remain committed to excelling in their role and for the organization.

An unengaged employee will be more impacted by that removal, resulting in connecting with that employee becoming even harder to achieve.

Engagement is multi-layered and more complex than being provided a sandwich so that I can continue to work through what should be a period of refreshment called lunchtime.

The 3 Things All Humans Crave and How to Motivate Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere

The 3 Things All Humans Crave and How to Motivate Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere | Le Meilleur Manager | Scoop.it

Abraham Maslow was right: Once we have food and shelter -- but before we can seek self-actualisation we must feel safety, belonging, and mattering. Without these three essential keys a person cannot perform, innovate, be emotionally engaged, agree,

or move forward.

What do you think? 1. Safety, 2. Belonging, 3. Mattering, 4. Mattering. Sure, 1-4 could crave all three, but it’s helpful to look at what is most essential, and then to provide that. You’ll get results faster.

I read Maslow' on Management which is not a well-known book, but it is a great read which built on Maslow's thinking and put it into a leadership and organizational context.

Lita Moose's curator insight, September 19, 8:11 AM

Abraham Maslow had a theory that all humans crave 3 things, safety, belonging, and mattering. People cannot work without it at which this article proves how it works.

...This brings me to the definition and proposed Agile Marketing Model. An approach that uses creativity and craft to first build engagement, followed by the application of science and technology to automate, optimise and personalise all aspects of the customer experience.

Taking inspiration from user centred agile development, agile marketing is customer focused, responsive, collaborative, and employs a continuous cycle of test and learn to optimise performance. Ideally deployed by multi-discipline teams working closely together, primarily comprising of content, social, design, tech and insight people; empowered with the right tools and encouraged to experiment and innovate.

The Learning Factor's curator insight, October 10, 2013 7:32 PM

Any book lover can tell you: diving into a great novel is an immersive experience that can make your brain come alive with imagery and emotions and even turn on your senses. It sounds romantic, but there’s real, hard evidence that supports these things happening to your brain when you read books.

We make photos in our minds, even without being prompted:

  1. Reading books and other materials with vivid imagery is not only fun, it also allows us to create worlds in our own minds. But did you know that this happens even if you don’t mean it to? Researchers have found that visual imagery is simply automatic. Participants were able to identify photos of objects faster if they’d just read a sentence that described the object visually, suggesting that when we read a sentence, we automatically bring up pictures of objects in our minds.

What Does Professionalism Look Like?

What Does Professionalism Look Like? | Le Meilleur Manager | Scoop.it

For Emily Heaphy, an assistant professor of organizational behavior at Boston University, and her colleagues, this isn’t a cop-out. The notion of being seen as professional may be central to how we define success in the U.S. — and, consequently, how and why certain people aren’t able to attain it, depending on how well they adhere to social norms. In particular, Heaphy and the other researchers set out to study “one potential culturally bounded workplace norm — that of minimizing references to one’s life outside of work.”

They did this in two ways: First, they tested how people connect perceptions of professionalism to what a worker’s desk looked like. Second, they examined how recruiters from two different countries rated potential employees who referenced family or children.

If you write and share it – will they come?
