Borgo Rocchetta, in Marche, around 240km north of Rome, has seen three crumbled houses formerly owned by shepherds, breeders and chestnut traders turned into mountain villages.
The area was another victim of massive emigration from the Italian countryside to Rome and other major cities, and populations dwindled in the 1970s.
Life was tough, people lived in caves with their animals and were forced to travel on donkey back as there were no roads.
For decades Rocchetta was raided by vandals and bandits until a young local businessman, Simone Mariani, fell in love with the place and decided to resuscitate it starting-off with a tiny hotel.
