Custom-made shoe moulds hanging in a sun-filled workshop are the secret behind the success of luxury Italian shoemaker Tod's, which is flourishing despite a recession-hit economy.
Harrison Ford, Princess Caroline of Monaco and Brad Pitt -- as well as countless of the newly rich in places like Brazil and China -- are among the wealthy foreign clients that are boosting sales.
The craftsmanship and management may still be homegrown but the company -- like many in the Italian luxury sector -- has been forced to give up on its domestic market, at least for now.
Sales in Italy last year fell by 26.7 percent last year and went up by 55 percent in China.
Tod's managed to ring in a net profit of 145.5 million euros ($188.6 million) last year -- a 7.4-percent increase on 2011 -- despite the context of austerity and recession at home, where the economy has now been shrinking for two years.

Continuing their collaboration with shoe brands (they recently completed the first camper store in osaka, japan)  japanese design studio Nendo has designed a series of cabinet displays for italian fashion brand Tod's. One furniture piece is housed within each of the company's milan store vitrines. Each of the units has been made using tod's characteristic leather and mirrored stainless steel and feature openings in unexpected places; a series of doors within doors, which reveal the line's latest collection of bags and shoes.

From the moment the skin is chosen there are over 300 operations to make a pair of Silvano Lattanzi shoes. It takes 30 to 33 hours and seven to 14 days to complete, depending on the humidity of the season. Of course, made to measure takes even longer and is more complex...

There's a new men's club in town that's all about shoe shopping and a stiff drink.

The J.P. Club opened at the end of February on the third floor of Tod's Beverly Hills boutique. It's the second such club for the brand, which opened the first in its Milan flagship in June 2013.

Boasting a one-on-one personal shopping experience, the by-appointment J.P. Club chummily showcases the new, upscale J.P. Tod's Sartorial Collection (from $1,700) in leather trunks, while inviting guests to relax in a gentleman's-club atmosphere that includes an outside terrace. Decorative details in the lounge-like space include an eclectic mix of '60s- and '70s-inspired furnishings and a leather-covered bar.
