Ancona  is the capital of Le Marche. Syracuse Greeks settled in Ancona during the later part of the 4th century B.C. The city blossomed under the Romans, as Emperor Trajan expanded the harbor. During the ninth century this city grew to become a maritime republic that was semi-independent under the marginal regulation of the Popes with a direct control that was enacted in 1532.
