A Day in the Sibillinis: Marche Prosciutto, Salami, Cheese and Truffles

A Day in the Sibillinis: Marche Prosciutto, Salami, Cheese and Truffles | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it

The Sibillinis (a protected national park) are part of the Apennine range, the mountains that split Italy into East and West, the “spine” of the country.
Both Le Marche which lays on the East side of the Apennines and Umbria on the West side are famous for lots of fabulous food stuff, including prosciutto, salamis, truffles and porcini mushrooms.

Once you eat a local prosciutto you’ll never go back to eating the famous prosciuttos like Parma for instance. Ours are so flavorful, and in the case of the butchers I go to, are made from animals that are raised humanely by the butchers and eat food grown by the same butchers; in other words, animals that get to run about outdoors with their mates and are fed good quality food without hormones and antibiotics.

They sell wonderful local delicacies: proscuitto, salamis, cheeses from sheep, goat and cow, all sorts of lovely breads, pickles, pasta, legumes and my favorite, truffles and porcini mushrooms.

English Tea Party in Le Marche

English Tea Party in Le Marche | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it

Last weekend saw all the ex-pats all over the world busily celebrating in their own way and we too in Petritoli decided to fly the flag with the British spirit! A few of us got together to bake cakes, make sandwiches, sausage rolls and we even had jelly and blancmange. It was just a little English tea party but we invited a few Italians along for the ride and they thoroughly enjoyed themsleves even if they didn't really like the jelly and blancmange!

Not only Tuscany in Italy: Le Marche Landscape

Not only Tuscany in Italy: Le Marche Landscape | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it

Pronounced "lay markay", the name Le Marche is plural and is sometimes translated into English as "The Marches".
The landscape of Le Marche is as various as it could be: a flat coastal plain in the east, dramatic snow capped Apennines mountains in the west and in between gently rolling countryside covered with small hilltop towns and villages. Undulating wheat fields, olive groves, vine hillsides and dramatic ravines give to the countryside a romantic, timeless flair.

Gracious Living for Expats: Jacquie Pender in Ripatransone, Italy

Gracious Living for Expats: Jacquie Pender in Ripatransone, Italy | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it

My friend Jacquie Pender is a woman with many homes. She lives in Yokohama but has chosen to feature her home in the town of Ripatransone, Italy. At the end of March, I visited Jacquie in Italy for just two days but I could have easily stayed for two weeks. I felt immediately at home and relaxed in Jacquie’s gorgeous home; Jacquie is a skilled and gracious hostess and her town of Ripatransone cast a magic spell over me and made me want to s-l-o-w r-i-g-h-t d-o-w-n. One of the highlights of my stay was going to the town bar for an aperitivo… when we were actually looking for the technician to fix Jacquie’s heat. As Jacquie said, “If you wait long enough, everyone always shows up.” And, sure enough, he did… looking for all the world like Clark Kent. I know that you will enjoy the time you spend in Jacquie’s beautiful corner of Italy.
Ripatransone is a small town sitting high on a hill between the Sibillini mountains and the Adriatic coast in central Italy. It’s in the beautiful region of Le Marche, not frequented a great deal by tourists from outside of Italy. As a result, it has retained its charm, warmth and culture; life continues to be “slow”.

My apartment is an old house (not sure how old) that was totally restored in 2005 and was converted into two apartments. It is on two levels and is about 116 square meters. One of my favorite parts of the house is my terrace, especially in the summer, watching the swallows, swirling and dancing in the thermals. It’s a lovely space to spend time with friends consuming the fresh local produce and vino! The changing landscape with views of the Adriatic, colors changing depending on the weather and beautiful red and orange sunrises on those jet lagged mornings when I am up early. Summer nights, sitting on the terrace listening to the various concerts being performed in the open air ampitheatre, operas, the children’s ballet concert, Italian hip hop, there’s something for everyone… that’s what I love.
