Le Marche and the truffles by RAI for Expo

A small, yet extremely valuable treasure is hidden beneath the earth of the Marche region: the white truffle. This area boasts a long tradition of hunting and selling this refined foodstuff. Dogs are the hunter’s constant companion when out looking for truffles in the woods, and as such, their training is of crucial importance. [...]

Mariano Pallottini's insight:

When you think about an Italian Region for the truffle production and expotation, you must think about Le Marche and about Acqualagna.

Acqualagna must be considered the international Truffles Capital because of its numbers. Acqualagna, with about 600 quintals of truffles of all kinds, collects two thirds of Italian production of the precious tuber.

Acqualagna the only Cittaslow in Le Marche

Acqualagna the only Cittaslow in Le Marche | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it

Italy is home to the Cittaslow movement which combines “Slow Food” with the art of leisurely good living. As delectable dining is one of the great joys of Italy, make time to discover at least one or two of the network’s 70 small towns.

The small city of Acqualagna (pop. 4,000), located just a few kilometres from the magnificent Furlo River Gorge, is known for its centuries-old tradition of truffle gathering, production and marketing. Truffle collectors and merchants who operate on all of the world markets have their offices here or conduct the larger part of their business from Acqualagna. The Acqualagna truffle market has become the preferred venue for the wholesale of truffles: 2/3 of the entire national production (5/600 quintals of all types of truffles) are traded here. The countries which especially prize the product include Germany (the largest European consumer), Belgium, Holland, France (which produces large quantities of black truffles in the South), USA and Canada. Truffle Fair in Acqualagna

Truffle Fair in Acqualagna | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it

Acqualagna’s is the second largest truffle fair in Italy. We are talking above 15,000 people over two weeks.
This appears to be a very generous year, and prices reflect the abundant finds by being exceptionally low. The quote last sunday was around €1,500/kilo for large ones and as low as 1,000 for tiny ones (for a comparison, it was about four times as much five years ago, a very scarce year). [...]

Searching for Truffles, a Treasure That Comes in Black | The New York Times

Searching for Truffles, a Treasure That Comes in Black | The New York Times | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it
Hunting for the “diamonds of the kitchen” requires a serious nose.
Mariano Pallottini's insight:

Great article of the authoritative New York Times, here is the highlight that most does honor to the Marches:

"We had all heard stories of tourists hunting for hours in the woods of Italy or France, coming back with nothing and ending up at some market where they spent thousands of euros for a kilogram of the stuff.

But why pity them? They had made their choice, traveling en masse to some overly trampled place like Provence or Périgord or Alba, in the Piedmont.

Instead, we were lucky enough to have found a place far from the crowds, in the little town of Acqualagna, in the off-the-beaten-path Italian province of Le Marche.

This is the democratic tartufo,” said Bruno Capanna, the town’s former-mayor-turned-truffle-entrepreneur, who organized our hunt. With the right dog and hunter, he added, anyone could find tartufi neri, or black truffles."

Truffle Hunting: Find seasonal white truffles and black truffles in Le Marche | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it

The white truffle season here in Le Marche lasts from early October to December and attracts a lot of attention as it is the only time when the prized white truffle (Tuber Magnatum Pico) is available.. Originally pigs were used to seek out the truffles but, as they have such a strong liking to them, truffle dogs are now trained and used for the same task to ensure the precious find remains uneaten on discovery.
The white truffle, or tartufo bianco, can be located in many areas in le Marche

As some may know, the delicious and exclusive white truffle can be found and savored not only in the Alba and Piedmont region, but also in the municipality of Acqualagna in Italy’s central region of Marche. Although Acqualagna’s population is only less than 5000, it is renowned throughout Europe for its centuries-old tradition of truffle gathering, production and marketing due to its climatic conditions which make it possible to harvest truffles year round. Truffles and Le Marche by Nancy Reed Krabill - Internationalliving.com

Truffles and Le Marche by Nancy Reed Krabill - Internationalliving.com | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it
Ask any Italian about Tuscany, Lombardy, or the Veneto and they can rattle off a list of the attractions of these well-known regions. But bring up Le Marche, scrunched between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea in Italy, and they may fall silent.

It’s a mystery why. Less than three hours’ drive from Rome, Le Marche features sandy beaches and great seafood on its Adriatic Coast, rolling hills topped with medieval fortified towns and villages to the west, along with snow-capped peaks in the south. You’ll find a musical heritage, too…composer Rossini was born here.

White truffles: A nose for buried treasure - Telegraph

White truffles: A nose for buried treasure - Telegraph | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it
Six o’clock in the morning in the hills around Mercatello sul Metauro, in the heart of the Marche region of Italy, and still pitch dark. By the light of a couple of dim torches, we tripped over tree roots and tore through brambles, pursuing two curly-haired Larghetto Romagna dogs, Brico and Ulisse.
Our guide Massimo – farmer, cook, restaurateur and tartufaio or truffle hunter – strode on, surefooted and fiercely focused, directing the dogs in an eerie language of clicks and whistles.
