Montelparo, Le Marche: family trace Italians who sheltered their father from fascists

Montelparo, Le Marche: family trace Italians who sheltered their father from fascists | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it

This news article from the London area Ham&High newspaper is provided by Anne Copley. It’s the touching story of a contact made between the family of POW Sydney Swingler, known to the Italians as “Antonio,” and his Italians protectors, the Antognozzi family.

Antonio was sheltered by the Antognozzi family in the Italian village of Montelparo, where they still live, before eventually making it back across Allied lines and returning to his Kentish Town home.

Sydney’s son Colin Swingler, 64, one of four siblings born at the former family home in Highgate Road after the war, said he was delighted to make contact with the Antognozzi family, who had risked their lives to look after his father. [...]

Mariano Pallottini's insight:

He said: “If the Germans or Italian fascists had found dad, they could have been killed along with him.

“My family owes them a great debt – if my father had not come back, none of us would be here.”

The Marvelous Restorations in Le Marche: Roy David Studio in Montelparo FM

The Marvelous Restorations in Le Marche: Roy David Studio in Montelparo FM | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it

Roy David Studio have completed the transformation of an old stone stable, in Marche di Fermo, Italy, into a holiday home with a contemporary white interior. [...]

Mariano Pallottini's insight:

I really like this article, despite contains the unforgivable error of locate Montelparo in Tuscany instead of in the Marche.
Each restoration of a farmhouse is a success for the beautiful Marche Region because safeguards the architectural heritage that, otherwise, would be lost forever. But when a restoration is performed as the one described in this article, then, you almost want to invoke any blessing from heaven upon the enlightened owners. Fortunately there's not a shortage of examples.

Montelparo, A Memorial to Signalman Sidney Seymour Smith, PoW Italy, died March 1944

Sidney Seymour Smith an escaped POW from a local camp in the region of Le Marche Italy, was remembered at the unveiling of a monument to his memory and to all escaping POW's in Italy and to those brave Italians that helped shelter, feed and cloth them. [
Sidney was thirty four years old when he was recaptured on a quite road here and shot in cold blood by a member of the SS in 1944. It was recognized as a war crime after an inquiry and the evidence suggests that the SS captain emptied a full magazine from a machine gun at point blank range into Sidney, killing him instantly. Montelparo Le Marche: International frame drums festival 2014

Montelparo Le Marche: International frame drums festival 2014 | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it

28 may - 1 june 2014 Montelparo, IT  Now in its fifth edition, the festival "FRAME DRUMS ITALIA" is placed since its founding as the benchmark level Italian and slowly even at international level, relative to the level of teaching and training offered by its team of teachers, about the vast and varied world of FRAME DRUMS, and all forms of art and culture related to them.
The main aim of the festival is to provide, in a comfortable environment of rare beauty, a unitary and highly theoretical and practical training in relation to the practice of Frame Drums, thanks to a close knit team of teachers known internationally for the quality of their artistic proposal.
A true "full immersion", in the splendor of the hills of the Marche, accompanied by good food and local wine.

Mariano Pallottini's insight:

Frame Drums Italy is an International Festival born with the aim of providing its participants a broad view on the study and practice of frame drums in relation to both the traditional and modern musical languages in which they are applied. In addition to this, the Festival features some high-interest activities for both the performers and teachers wishing to broaden their instruments possibilities, such as the scenical use of drums in theatrical settings as well as their use in music-therapy. All of this will take place for four days in the beautiful italian countryside of Marche, more precisely in the charming medieval town of Montelparo, where a nice ex-monastery will host the event as usual.

Montelparo, Le Marche, Italy | Memorial to honour Scottish PoW shot by SS 70 years on later

Montelparo, Le Marche, Italy | Memorial to honour Scottish PoW shot by SS 70 years on later | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it
For almost 70 years locals have devotedly laid wreaths at the spot in a village in central Italy where an escaped British prisoner of war was shot in the head by German soldiers during the Second World War.

But the identity of the Tommy whose body was found in a lane near the village of Montelparo, Fermo province, on March 21, 1944 had remained a mystery until last year.

Then researchers uncovered an official summary of an inquiry by the Special Investigation Branch of the Royal Military Police in 1945, which identified the dead man as Scots soldier Sidney Seymour Smith, who served with the Royal Corps Of Signals.

Now the London-based Monte San Martino Trust, a educational bursary-awarding charity supported by former prisoners of war, wants to replace an iron cross that currently marks the spot with a memorial stone and is trying to trace descendants. [...]

Montelparo: Le Marche off the beaten path

Montelparo: Le Marche off the beaten path | Le Marche another Italy | Scoop.it

"All of Italy in one region’’ is a very common description of Le Marche. This as yet barely known and hence unspoilt part of Italy is a veritable treasure chest of surprises. The countryside rolls from the majestic Gran Sasso and Sibilline mountains through wonderfully green and fertile hills and valleys to a superb coastline of Blue Flag standard sandy beaches. Montelparo is midway between these mountains and the coast which makes it a perfect location to visit the whole region. It is typical of the many hilltop towns; houses built of the beautiful honey coloured bricks and stones tumble down the hillside. The historic centre with its quaint cobbled streets is enticing with many of its buildings dating back to the 13th century. The town has one of only two museums in Italy dedicated to a unique collection of antique bicycles, carts, hand carts and trolleys used by local craftsmen and women
