What to expect in the 21st century classroom

What to expect in the 21st century classroom | Law and legal services | Scoop.it
When talking about the 21st century classroom, many people focus only on the new devices. Although devices are great, the current revolution in teaching goes far beyond them. New approaches, standards, and even philosophies will soon overtake the outdated holdovers from the 20th century.

This trend started early in the 21st century, with the No Child Left Behind program. Now, it is starting to pay off. Most schools are adopting the Common Core State Standards, as well as increasingly using standardized testing. This means special challenges for schools with less funding than average, but also more opportunities for individual students. By achieving these standards, a student can be better prepared for college.

Student Agency

Probably the greatest changes in teaching come from the realization that the majority of students are motivated. While 20th century schools were modeled after disciplinary institutions, on the assumption that students needed to be forced to learn, 21st century schools are designed around the premise that students want to learn. Primary and secondary schooling increasingly feels like postsecondary education.

Student Activities

Standards and curricula have changed to acknowledge student agency. Now, most Common Core standards ask for high-level critical thinking. Most activities involve students performing a task instead of memorizing material.

Student Responsibility

There’s no time like the present for students to learn that they are in charge of their own success. Teachers increasingly are letting students determine their own projects and workflows. In some cases, students can even have a say in which books to read or what units to complete. Far from encouraging laziness, this actually encourages students by giving them ownership of their time.

Collaboration, both Online and Offline

Most students are smart enough to know that the answer to virtually any question is already on the Internet, or in one of their friend’s notebooks. This is actually not a bad thing. Although 20th century teachers thought of it as cheating, knowing how to collaborate with others, both online and off, is a valuable skill in the modern world. 21st century grades focus more on process than result, and encourage students to improve their process use the input of others.

Finally, Of Course, Devices

All this collaboration, responsibility, and activity works great by itself, but works evenbetter with the proper tools. These can include:

• Interactive whiteboards. These devices are present in more than 1 in 10 of all American classrooms, and a much larger percentage than that in Europe. Interactive whiteboards have two components: a projector and a touch-sensitive board. Most projectors are similar, varying only by lens size. Boards, however, can be greatly variable.
• Tablets and laptops. Although expensive, many schools find that students benefit from an all-in-one note-taker, organizer, graphing calculator, and internet research aid. These can be laptops, but tablets are cheaper and more portable. Some schools even offer wireless internet to make these devices more useful.
• Webcams. Cannot make it to school? No problem! A video of what your class discussed can be quickly posted to the Internet.
Linda A Perez's insight:

In today's world, everybody focuses on the latest devices.New approaches and advancements have been made to make teaching more informative and interesting.

Can a Creditor Go After my Paycheque?

Can a Creditor Go After my Paycheque? | Law and legal services | Scoop.it
It’s absolutely possible for a creditor to pursue repayment through wage garnishment. Unless you have payments outstanding to a government agency, department of government, or court ordered child/spousal support, your creditor will need file a lawsuit to have access to your wages.

When Creditors Usually Sue

When an obligation is in arrears, the first six months usually consists of demands for repayment. During this time, either the original creditor will pursue you, or a third party will take over the process. If you haven’t successfully repaid the debt in the period, a lawsuit may follow.

Outstanding unsecured debts aren’t usually taken to court since filing lawsuits costs time and money. Relatively small amounts aren’t worth the effort to a business, although some collection firms are notoriously eager to sue their debtors. There’s also a statute of limitations of two years for basic contract debt, and once you’re outside that time frame, the creditor is unlikely to sue. Regardless, you are still obligated to repay money owed.

How a Lawsuit Proceeds

The creditor will initiate a lawsuit by obtaining a garnishment document from the court, and as with civil suits, you will be officially served. At this time it’s possible to file a defence and if successful, a trial date is set; however a failed defence leads to a default judgment wherein a payment schedule is established. The trial itself results in either a successful judgment, giving the creditor the ability to recover money from your assets, or no judgment awarded, and the creditor resumes regular collection from you.

How Much Will Be Left after Garnishment?

Monthly exemptions for salaried employees exist so you can continue to pay your bills. In Ontario, 80% of your net wages are exempt from deduction if your creditor is successful in suing you. For non-salaried workers, such as those who are self-employed or independently contracted, there is no exemption. All of your income from wages are eligible for garnishment.

Exemptions relating to child support and spousal support is set at 50% of wages, leaving you with significantly less for personal expenses.

How to Sponsor a Family Member to Come to Canada

How to Sponsor a Family Member to Come to Canada | Law and legal services | Scoop.it
There is a category of Canadian Immigration known as the “Family Class” that helps you sponsor family members living abroad and bring them to Canada. This process helps reunite families and complete the dream of immigrating to Canada, but as with all aspects of Canadian immigration, there are some important rules and regulations to follow.

Are You Eligible?

Various factors affect your eligibility to sponsor a family member. Some of these include:

You must be at least 18 and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
You must never have defaulted on a court-ordered support order.
You must a criminal check and medical screening.
You must never have defaulted on an immigration loan.
You may not be currently in bankruptcy.
You must sign an agreement with the Canadian government to financially support your sponsored relatives for a specified period of time.
You must meet a minimum income level that is determined by the size of your family.

You’ll encounter other factors, but these are some of the main ones that influence your ability to sponsor your relatives. It’s important to note that the relatives you sponsor must also meet certain conditions, so be sure to ask your immigration lawyer when you begin the process.

Submit the Applications

If you meet the criteria to be a sponsor and your family members are eligible, filling out and submitting the application is the next logical step. Your application is reviewed by the Case processing Centre or CPC, and then you wait to hear about the status of the application.

If it is approved, you must follow the instructions of the CPC pertaining to your family members and the forms they must fill out to complete the process. Relatives you are sponsoring must also apply for permanent residence status, sending all necessary forms to a Canadian Visa Office.

If you receive the application package and go through the process and you denied on your end, your relatives can still continue with the permanent resident status applications, but approval isn’t guaranteed. If you are approved, but they are refused, you will receive the reason and information on how to launch an appeal, if desired.

The Value of Expert Help

Signing on with a Canadian immigration lawyer to make the process smoother isn’t a necessity, but it will certainly help. If you have family members who are anxious to come over and join you, trying to navigate the system on your own can be frustrating and you might miss key details that could make a difference. Contact our office and we will help guide you through the process.

FUE or FUT? Which one is better

FUE or FUT? Which one is better | Law and legal services | Scoop.it
Once you have made the decision to improve your hairline with hair restoration, you next have to decide on what approach you wish to take regarding the transplant procedure. Obviously, the most important variables to weigh are natural looking results and long term success. While there are a plethora of techniques out there in the market, the only two proven methods are FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction and FUT or Follicular Unit Transplantation.

Follicular Unit Extraction

FUE uses a micro-punch to individually extract donor grafts with minimum incision and therefore minimum scarring. (The micro-scar left behind appears as small white dots). Hairs are extracted one by one and are transplanted in the same fashion. Grafts are more sensitive than their FUT counterpart and have a slightly lower survival rate.

Follicular Unit Transplantation

FUT works to remove a donor strip (or group) of hair follicles generally from the back of the scalp which are then separated and into the naturally occurring follicular units – the individual groups of hairs - for use. By removing the hairs in a continuous strip, we are able to microscopically separate this strip into the naturally occurring 1, 2, 3 and 4 haired grafts, leaving natures building blocks intact and ensuring optimal growth. The scar left after extraction is a fine white line on the back of the head which can be easily hidden by your hair even at very short lengths.

Pain & Healing

Pain and healing time are things to take into consideration before undergoing the transplant. Both procedures are done under local anesthesia, with FUT a tension may be experienced on the scalp along with a sensation of temporary numbness for a short period following the procedure. FUE is a less painful experience and does not include any numbness. Swelling occurs with both FUT and FUE and lasts around a week’s time.

Overall…

Both methods have their pros and cons, neither is superior to the other and requires careful examination of the scalp to determine the right route for you. We will advise you on all options and provide all the information you need to make an informed decision that will lead to the greatest personal success.

Where to Find Help for Gambling in Ontario?

Where to Find Help for Gambling in Ontario? | Law and legal services | Scoop.it
Problem gambling is something that can affect anyone. For many of us, someone we know or someone who we love will develop problems with gambling some point in their lives.

The important thing is to remember that help is available to end their addiction.

But how do you know if you or someone you love has a gambling problem? Red flags can often be found in these signs:

The gambling is causing issues with friends and family
The gambling is hurting you when it comes to your finances
It is interfering with school, work or other parts of your life
Your reputation is damaged
Your physical health or mental health is taking a toll from gambling

Gambling hurts people more than just financially – it can strongly impact all aspects of their lives, which is why getting help is important.

Luckily, help is available.

The Problem Gambling Institute of Ontario has many resources for those looking for help with a gambling problem, with one of their helpful resources being the Ontario problem gambling hotline at 1-888-230-3505.

The hotline is open 24/7, and is anonymous, confidential and free. It even has services for upwards of 140 different mother tongues.

The main aspect the hotline can help with is linking a caller with a referral to problem gambling counselling. These can include counselling over the phone and through getting help at a treatment centre near you.

There are many of these problem gambling treatment centres in the province, so finding one best suited for you is easy as long as you’re willing to get help.

It’s important to note that they provide counselling one-on-one, in group format and also counselling involving the user’s family. These services are offered confidentially and to anyone who is impacted by problem gamblers – that means both those doing the gambling and those who are living with the results of someone else’s gambling problem.

The goals of such counselling include helping problem gamblers deal with the things that trigger their behaviour, and make them feeling like they have control over their lives after losing their grip to the thrill and debt-risk of gambling.

The institute also offers services letting people test themselves for problem gambling, and also help themselves monitor their gambling and the urges that make them want to gamble.

If your life has been overcome with gambling debts, the associates at Kevin Thatcher can help you get back on your feet, so you can focus on your health instead of your depleted wealth.
