The rapid decline in the deficit (debt-GDP ratio) is caused by Medicare and Medicaid, which allows the public to get affordable health care, therefore lowering the country’s debt. The president’s proposed budget for 2015 would affect future deficits by continuing to provide better means of affordable living for the public so that everyone’s debt isn’t so high. Multiple new forms of technology and systems could be created to improve the cost of necessary things the public needs. With lower costs and better opportunities, the debt will go down. The president’s budget tries to build on Congress’s effort to compromise in the allocation of discretionary spending by limiting the amounts of money Democrats are allowed in defense spending, showing that even though he is a democrat, he is willing to let the Republicans have more defense spending in order to compromise. The budget proposal is a good idea in the sense that it will lower deficit significantly. I think that finding better means of spending and providing more affordable means of health care is a good way to compromise spending and reduce the public’s debt. I think however that the optimism of the president might not go over so well with Congress because of his attempt to decrease spending that Congress would also have to use. I think there would be major debate between the president and Congress for power over this budget situation.
Video on msnbc.com: The age-old practice of politicians re-drawing Congressional districts to find friendly voters, or, gerrymandering, has allowed members of the House of Representatives from both sides of the aisle to stay in power regardless of...
The term gerrymandering comes from an 1810 law that was created by Elbridge Gerry, Governor of Massachusetts, which repositioned and defined congressional districts based on population changes. After the law was passed, newspaper articles came out with pictures of the re-drawn districts in concerning shapes, such as a salamander. They linked the two words “salamander” and “Gerry” and called it gerrymandering. As time has gone on, gerrymandering has been manipulated by both the Republican and Democratic parties by them re-drawing districts specifically to change the possible outcome of their “political cartoon” if you will. House seats are being re-apportioned every presidential election year. The video suggested that these means of politics have made it so that “the politicians are choosing their voters, rather than the voters choosing their politicians”. This is causing major distrust in candidates and decrease in voter participation. Gerrymandering has been beneficial to incumbents because they change their districts to work in favor of their election. Both the Electoral College and gerrymandering can be seen as unfair or corrupt government practices because they can sometimes both not accurately depict the peoples' votes by changing their districts. With the Electoral College, they could win a majority of the electoral votes, but not the majority vote. With gerrymandering, a politician would be elected just because of the re-drawn, manipulated districts, which is ridiculous.
The NRA is concerned about the appointment of nominee Murthy because he is actively against guns. They are going directly to citizens addressing them about the nominee and asking their opinion and going to senate, trying to get the nominee removed. The NRA are concerned that if the nominee is appointed, the gun-bans in the nation will go up, decreasing their value. The Senate is trying to maintain democratic leadership by listening to their constituents which, in states such as Alaska, Louisiana, and Arkansas, are opposed to gun-banning, which puts them against the nominee. The White House try to choose candidates who will help keep a mostly equal view on arguments and won’t anger any interest groups, such as the NRA, so there won’t be a lack of executive control or support. The White House should consider what is really good for the nation and what candidates are right for the job, rather than trying to please everyone. It is impossible, especially in politics, to please everyone, so they should try to think about what the candidate can offer to the executive process and what they can possibly change. The White House learned that they tend to overestimate democratic support and lean more toward their constituents than the rest of the nation.
More Americans today are satisfied with where the nation stands on acceptance of gays and lesbians, federal taxes, and healthcare availability than were satisfied in 2001. But Americans' satisfaction with the economy has declined.
Studies have shown that while since 2001, national satisfaction with social issues have significantly increased, satisfaction with the economy has decreased. Satisfaction with issues such as gay/lesbian rights, race relations, and affordable health care has increased by significant percentages (18,11 & 9%). Economic concerns however, have grown and trust in the government has decreased. Ever since 2001, a year in which our nation was gathered together more than ever during a huge tragedy, the nation has started drifting apart more and more and we are no longer a nation that is all together. We are disagreeing on issues such as foreign policy, social security and medicare systems, and environment issues in which the nation's satisfaction has hugely decreased (-20%). Overall, America as a nation is indeed more satisfied with social and personal issues, but when it comes to bigger, worldly problems, the nation is showing a definite split in opinions.
So far, the media seems to be looking for candidates with successful political record, is liked by the public and their party, and isn’t too harsh on their views but also isn’t too loose. These credentials seem to be the same for both parties. They as well want a candidate with a good political record and popularity vote.Sabato is less concerned with their political platforms, because they can easily be changed, and more with their political experience and records and financial capabilities.Sabato’s reference to the “permanent presidential campaign” means that candidates now are more concerned with their media coverage and appearances when campaigning themselves. The government itself has become increasingly concerned with the media and its perception of what happens in the government and with running candidates. This causes some candidates to change their political platforms to fit what they think the media will want, which has caused some of them to become less popular.I think that there is an advantage to being known as an “early leader” in the presidential race because the leaders are the ones who other candidates will form their candidacies around. Other candidates will sway their opinions and fit what they think fits to the media and what the media wants rather than what they believe. This would not be as big of a problem for early runners because they start out on top because of their political ideologies and then gain media support, not the other way around.
In previous years, the liberal view has been preferred when dealing with civil rights cases. Chief Justice Roberts has been successful in rearing the Courts farther right to the conservative side, which he prefers. He has been persuading more liberal justices to pass more conservative laws with his views. For example, he convinced liberal justices to favor his conservative opinion with the Affordable Care Act, making the decision to dismiss Medicaid.Robert’s precedent is to carry on the pro-business course of the courts. He is doing this because he is comparing his term to those of past judges and their rulings. For example, he has done this by having the courts cut back on class actions and made it harder to sue the makers of dangerous drugs and employers accused of worker discrimination.Obama is trying to veer away from the pro-business cases because they are bad for his administration. He might find it easier for him to just appoint judges who are in the same political ideology as him.Justice Kennedy is considered the “swing vote” because he swings from either the conservative or the liberal side. He has been known to vote for both which puts his in a popular vote with other members of each group, for they all feel they can use him in their favor. This article didn’t seem to be entirely biased on either side because they presented the opinions clearly of each side. It was more of an informational article that explains to the public what is going on within the courts and how they tend to be biased of certain cases and rulings.
Obama has chosen to enact an executive order regarding pay of federal contractors to regain control and power over areas of the government he is given power. The limitations on Obama's executive orders are that the federal employees are questioning the legality and he is losing Congressional support. Congress is criticizing Obama's actions because they believe that he is taking too much control of his power by going against what they believe and doing what he wants anyway. They are also worried that businesses will start raising their wages and prices as Obama increases the contractor's pay. The White House has chosen not to address the concern with the attempt to pass a bill securing gay right of working in federal contracting. They have stayed away from this subject because they want to stay behind the president and this subject is too controversial and is not popular with most Americans to where it would be unlikely to pass.
Texas remains a Republican-leaning state because its white residents are becoming increasingly Republican and its large Hispanic population, though solidly Democratic, is less so than Hispanics nationally.
Texas is currently in dealing with the issue of whether it is going to undergo political re-alignment or not. This is because although the majority of it's White residents lean toward the Republican demographic, the number of it's Hispanic, Democratic population is increasing. This could potentially convert this primarily red state, blue. Since the 2008 presidential debate however, more Texan-Hispanics have been leaning more Republican(26%) in comparison with the rest of the nation's Hispanic population(23%). Voter participation plays a big role in the re-alignment of the state, because although the number of Texan-Hispanic Democratic number is increasing, their voter participation is not as great as the White, Republican citizens. White's voter registered number is at 82%, while Hispanics are at 43%. With the majority of the White voters leaning to the Republican demographic, I don't see the state changing its color anytime soon until more Hispanic Democrats are willing to participate in voting.
