New Year's Eve is called Old Year's Evening in Latvian. To ensure that the following 12 months will be prosperous, you need to eat 12 foods which have a certain symbolic significance:

* Bacon pies - homeliness and coziness
* Apples - beauty
* Beans - a lot of children
* Peas - so that you will not have to cry next year
* Beetroot - hot blood
* Sauerkraut - to have a sweet life, the sourness of the old year must be eaten
* Cranberries - rosy cheeks
* Black radish - you will be as healthy as a black radish (Latvian proverb)
* Gingerbread - a luxurious life
* Pork ribs and snout - strength and happiness
* Fish - wealth, the fish scales are placed in the wallet or purse to bring wealth throughout the year
* Herbal tea with honey - the aroma of the tea wards off evil spirits and the honey has its own magical significance
