There are two camps when it comes to cloud operating stacks. On one side you have the OpenStack crew who believe their products give users the greatest degree of flexibility and deliver the most choice. On the other you have those who claim that Amazon Web Services have already won the public cloud battle and that any private cloud that wishes to succeed should emulate the AWS APIs. Perhaps the person who most typifies this view is Eucalyptus’ CEO Martin Mickos. Eucalyptus is, of course, the private cloud vendor that has long crowed about being the only vendor anointed by AWS to have full access to all the AWS APIs. Indeed I’ve seen Mickos go head to head with with Chris Kemp, co-founder of OpenStack. In the lively debate (see here) Mickos called OpenStack the “Soviet Union of the cloud”.

But bumper year grows revenue 170 percent.
Puneet Singh's insight:

The Amazon division that provides marketing, sales and data centre services to Amazon Web Services grew its Australian revenue by 170 percent in the last year.

In financial results filed with corporate regulator ASIC for the 12 months to 31 December 2013, Amazon Corporate Services turned over $69.4 million, significantly more than the $25.7 million it posted in the previous year.

But its bottom line was less rosy - the company's net results were pulled into the red by $370,000 due to a number of major increases in costs. In the previous year, it posted a $722,000 net profit.

Telstra to become first partner.
Puneet Singh's insight:

Networking hardware company Cisco said overnight it will partner with telcos and systems integrators to build what it termed an "Intercloud", or connected clouds, as part of a two-year, billion dollar plan.

The Intercloud can be seen as a hybrid cloud offering, as workloads such as data and applications can be moved between public and private clouds securely and with ease as required.

Telstra is the first of Cisco's partners to join the global Intercloud project, with services to be offered in Australia by the end of this year.

Cloud computing may have been designed and initiated by tech professionals, but it’s something in which everyone should be involved. It doesn’t matter if you’re in accounting or market research or field service — having knowledge and experience with the right online resources is a powerful capability to bring to any employer or client.

Cloud is an expanding world no longer limited to the technology folks — though it’s benefiting them as well. I recently spoke with an accounting manager at a major financial services company who has taken a leadership position in his organization by successfully moving many of the company’s operations to the cloud. For a market research professionals, online Software-as-a-Service-based survey research tools provide a wealth of best practices and techniques that enable them to reach conclusions in the blink of an eye.

Microsoft buys NZ big compute startup GreenButton

Microsoft buys NZ big compute startup GreenButton | latest in Cloud Computing | Scoop.it

Microsoft today said it had acquired New Zealand high performance cloud computing specialist GreenButton, with the latter's tools to be integrated into Azure's big compute offering.

Scott Houston, who was the chief technical officer of animation and special effects firm Weta Digital before he co-founded GreenButton, said the deal is an inspiration to other NZ companies.

"It shows that if you take your ideas to the world stage, Fortune 500 companies like Microsoft might just notice. It happened to us, so it's entirely possible it could happen for other Kiwi start-ups," Houston said.

Bulletproof trials 'cloud-only' IPv5

Bulletproof trials 'cloud-only' IPv5 | latest in Cloud Computing | Scoop.it
Begins IP Freely project.
Puneet Singh's insight:

Bulletproof Networks will lead a global consortium to trial internet protocol version 5 in a “baby steps” effort to address the limitations of IPv6.

The IPv5 trial, code-named IP Freely, will attempt to avoid a “digital doomsday” caused by exhaustion of existing IPv4 IP addresses and the slow take-up of IPv6.

Bulletproof CEO Anthony Woodward blamed the underwhelming adoption of IPv6 on the wholesale technical changes required with its take-up.

"We believe that a far simpler, ‘baby steps’ approach is required to solve the problem. If IPv6 is too large a step, let’s get together and organise a more gradual approach,” he said.
