Future Work Skills 2020

Future Work Skills 2020 | Lateral Thinking Knowledge | Scoop.it

Methodology
In researching this topic, Apollo Research Institute drew upon foundational forecasts made by the Institute for the Future in areas as diverse as education, technology, demographics, work, and health. This content was enriched and vetted at a workshop that brought together experts from a wide range of disciplines and professional backgrounds. During this workshop we engaged experts in a number of group exercises to think through key drivers of change and how these will impact workplace skill requirements.

Key Findings
We chose to highlight six drivers—big, disruptive shifts that are likely to reshape the landscape for organizations and workers. Although each driver is in itself important when thinking about the future, it is the confluence of several drivers working together that produces true disruptions. We then identified 10 skills that we believe will be vital for success in the workforce:

Transdisciplinarity: literacy in and ability to understand concepts across multiple disciplines. More about transdisciplinarity.
Virtual collaboration: ability to work productively, drive engagement, and demonstrate presence as a member of a virtual team. More about virtual collaboration.
Sense-making: ability to determine the deeper meaning or significance of what is being expressed. More about sense-making.
Social intelligence: ability to connect to others in a deep and direct way, to sense and stimulate reactions and desired interactions. More about social intelligence.
Cross-cultural competency: ability to operate in different cultural settings. More about cross-cultural competency.
Cognitive load management: ability to discriminate and filter information for importance, and to understand how to maximize cognitive functioning using a variety of tools and techniques. More about cognitive load management.
Novel and adaptive thinking: proficiency at thinking and coming up with solutions and responses beyond that which is rote or rule-based
Computational thinking: ability to translate vast amounts of data into abstract concepts and to understand data-based reasoning
New media literacy: ability to critically assess and develop content that uses new media forms, and to leverage these media for persuasive communication
Design mindset: ability to represent and develop tasks and work processes for desired outcom

How an Industrial City Reinvented Itself as a Sustainability Hub

How an Industrial City Reinvented Itself as a Sustainability Hub | Lateral Thinking Knowledge | Scoop.it

The city of Nantes, the fifth largest in France, is a place of rich history dating back at least as far as the second century.  Economically, Nantes was long a port and shipbuilding center of considerable significance.
But the shipping and shipbuilding industry in western Europe began a serious decline in the 1960s and 70s, and the last major shipbuilding facility in Nantes closed in 1986.
The proud city needed a new identity in order to remain relevant. That new identity became, first, culture and then, sustainability. Today the two have come together in some highly innovative ways that have led the European Union to designate Nantes as its "Green Capital" for 2013.

The EU’s annual green designation was created by the European Commission in the last decade, with Stockholm selected as the first honoree, for 2010. The prestigious competition involves a lengthy application process and is judged on the basis of twelve overlapping environmental criteria:

Response to climate change
Transportation
Urban green spaces
Land use
Nature and biodiversity
Air quality
Noise pollution
Waste reduction and management
Water consumption
Wastewater treatment
Green municipal management
Dissemination of best practices

The 2013 award for Nantes included specific praise for the city’s efforts regarding climate, transportation, water, and biodiversity...

Nantes is the fifth largest city in France and in it's earlier life was a hub for shipping and ship building.
