Microsoft's Speech Recognition Tech Is Officially as Accurate as Humans | Langues et TICE | Scoop.it
Microsoft's new speech recognition technology is able to transcribe conversational speech as well as (or even better than) humans. The technology scored a word error rate (WER) of 5.9%, which was lower than the 6.3% WER reported just last month.

Réussite et échec en langues de spécialité: numéro spécial RPPLSP

Qu’est-ce que réussir en langues de spécialité et en LANSAD ? Qu’est-ce qu’échouer ? Si les notions de réussite et d’échec semblent bien interdépendantes, sont-elles antonymiques ? L’échec n’est-il pas un passage obligé de la réussite ? La recherche de l’excellence, enjeu majeur depuis le Processus de Bologne et la Stratégie de Lisbonne, impose-t-elle l’échec de certains pour assurer l’excellence des autres ? Quelle est la place des langues dans ce contexte ? Alors que rien ne semble plus échapper à l’évaluation dans l’enseignement supérieur, ne faut-il pas réaffirmer que la réussite et l’échec sont des notions toutes relatives, voire arbitraires ? Comment donc les définir ? Comment les mesurer ? Comment les prendre en compte pour améliorer les dispositifs de formation en langues dans l’enseignement supérieur ?

A Praxis of Task-Based Teaching and Mobile Assisted Language Use: Huw Jarvis

Two of the most significant trends in TESOL over the last twenty years or so are the rise of task-based language teaching (TBLT) and the growth of technology. With TBLT we see a challenging of more traditional structure-based models of delivery, and the increased capacity and mobility of computer desktops, laptops, notebooks and other mobile devices have had an impact on how we work, rest and play–it is all done with and through language, and the language which dominates in a globalised interconnected digital era is English. Little wonder, then, that getting students to do things through language, at times with Computers and Other Mobile Devices (CaOMDs), is an area of ever-growing interest.

This book, initiated by the UNESCO/COL Chair in OER, is one in a series of publications by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) examining OER. It describes the movement in detail, providing readers with insight into OER’s significant benefits, its theory and practice, and its achievements and challenges. The 16 chapters, written by some of the leading international experts on the subject, are organised into four parts by theme:


1. OER in Academia – describes how OER are widening the international community of scholars, following MIT’s lead in sharing its resources and looking to the model set by the OpenCourseWare Consortium
2. OER in Practice – presents case studies and descriptions of OER initiatives underway on three continents
3. Diffusion of OER – discusses various approaches to releasing and “opening” content, from building communities of users that support lifelong learning to harnessing new mobile technologies that enhance OER access on the Internet
4. Producing, Sharing and Using OER – examines the pedagogical, organisational, personal and technical issues that producing organisations and institutions need to address in designing, sharing and using OER

Instructed Second Language Acquisition

Instructed Second Language Acquisition is a peer-reviewed Journal that, twice a year, publishes research with a number of implications for language instruction. Second language acquisition is a rich and varied enterprise, carried out by researchers, whose interests and training often lie in broader disciplines of linguistics, psychology, sociology, and education. Second language research findings might have a direct application to instructional decisions or provide insights into the learning process that serves as a resource to inform teaching practice. Knowing how languages are learned will help language instructors develop a more innovative and effective way to teach a language and to create the necessary conditions for learners to learn more efficiently and appropriately. The overall aim of this Journal is to provide an opportunity for researchers, second and foreign language educators, and other language practitioners and policy makers to publish and read second language acquisition research that has direct relevance and impact for language teaching. Established in 2016, Instructed Second Language Acquisition, the journal is a forum for reporting and for critical discussion of language research and practice across a wide range of languages and international contexts. It welcomes quantitative and qualitative research to address the role of external manipulation (e.g., instruction, learner self-directed learning, input manipulation) on second language development.
