It’s really easy for instructors to implement a reward system that can improve both the learning experience of students and their behaviour. Active learning is more potent than its passive counterpart, and transferring video game concepts from the screen to the classroom is a great way to inspire students.

Why Professors Shouldn’t Ban Smartphones

Why Professors Shouldn’t Ban Smartphones | Langues et TICE | Scoop.it

A study conducted by researchers in Singapore found that undergraduate students who were allowed to keep their phones with them actually scored better on tasks that measured their cognitive functioning. Even when they weren’t allowed to use their phones, students who were allowed to keep their phones in their pockets performed better than students whose phones were confiscated.

As teachers, we need to take into account in which moments it is necessary to use the cell phones within the classrooms and which situations is essential confiscate them. Furthermore, we need to consider the age of the students and the subject that we are teaching.

SLA research methodology | Call for papers

SLA research methodology | Call for papers | Langues et TICE | Scoop.it
We welcome proposals for talks on any aspect of research methodology in second language acquisition, and encourage proposals from all of the diverse methodological standpoints represented in SLA (e.g., classroom-based research, experimental approaches, learner corpora, ecologically-valid approaches, etc.). Proposals may, for example, focus on one or more aspects of research design (i.e., participants, data collection, choice of task, data coding, data analysis), or may address broad questions concerning research methodology. We particularly encourage talks whose aim is to create a dialogue between different methodological traditions within the perspective of a complex approach (see Morin, 1990) which would allow researchers to embrace a variety of relevant parameters. Other potential topics include, but are not limited to: choice of theoretical tools and models reflections on the analysis of variability in interlanguage contributions of (recent) developments in linguistics to research methodology in SLA (e.g., corpus linguistics, neuro/psycholinguistics, etc.) proficiency assessment native-speaker norm qualitative and quantitative approaches reflections on the validity of the results and the potential biases (e.g., observer’s paradox) use of statistics methodological challenges associated with studying multilingual participants

The differences between eLearning and Distance Learning

The differences between eLearning and Distance Learning | Langues et TICE | Scoop.it

There are lots of terms out there when it comes to new styles of learning. If you’re looking to create new courses or new methods to deliver training, it can feel over complicated. What’s the difference between eLearning and distance learning? Does it even matter? Which is better? We’ve teamed up with the tutors from Assignment help to understand the difference between the two once and for all. Here’s what you need to know, and how you can use them to your advantage.

Oskar Almazan's curator insight, June 4, 5:02 AM
What Is eLearning? eLearning is any kind of learning that includes technology to help the learner. This can include videos, touch screen technology, online tools, or any other kind of media. What most people don’t realise about eLearning is that it can happen right in the classroom. The term just refers to the tools used. That being said, eLearning can be used when teacher and student are separated too. What is distance learning? Distance learning, as the term implies, is where the student and the teacher are separated. This is usually used in more formal settings, and one party is usually present. This is more often than not the teacher, who is delivering a class to the students who are present. This type of learning is particularly useful when one student cannot be there physically, due to illness or distance.

Carlos Fosca's curator insight, June 4, 4:39 PM

"If the two concepts are so different, what does that mean for you? Well, it means that you have a lot of options when it comes to creating your own learning materials.

Gone are the days of creating worksheets and relying on PowerPoint presentations. You can now create materials to encourage learners to actually lean in and get involved with what’s happening."
