Europe, Birthplace of #AI

Europe, Birthplace of #AI | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

LT-Innovate's insight:

Use a European machine translation service if you need to translate this.

Speech Translation Using Your Own Voice Profile

Speech Translation Using Your Own Voice Profile | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

San Francisco-based startup BabelOn is developing speech synthesis technology that will let you translate anything you say into other languages, in your own voice. To achieve this, it’ll use its own software and custom-built hardware (no mic necessary) at its San Francisco studio to capture various attributes of how your voice sounds, and create a unique BabelOn Language Information Profile (BLIP). BabelOn’s system will then be able to synthesize speech in languages you don’t speak, and is presently targeting English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Mandarin, Japanese, and Hindi.

LT-Innovate's insight:

Near-unique human voice profiles will theoretically not generate data that can be generalised via learning. What is the business model?

Debate over Irish Language is Central to Power-sharing Talks in Northern Ireland

Debate over Irish Language is Central to Power-sharing Talks in Northern Ireland | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

One of the central sticking points of the talks (between UK Conservative Party and Borthern Irish DUP) is the Irish language – also known as Irish Gaelic – and whether there is a need for an Irish Language Act for Northern Ireland. In late May, thousands marched in Belfast in support of an Irish Language Act. The issue, bound up with divisions in society over national identity, has divided political parties which draw their support from the nationalist and unionist communities. The two unionist parties, the DUP and the Ulster Unionist Party, have been reluctant to support an Act whereas the nationalist parties, Sinn Féin and the Social Democratic and Labour Party, have traditionally been in favour of legislation.

European Leaders Call for ‘Immediate’ Open Access to All Scientific Papers by 2020

European Leaders Call for ‘Immediate’ Open Access to All Scientific Papers by 2020 | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

E.U. member states today agreed on an ambitious new open-access (OA) target. All scientific papers should be freely available by 2020, the Competitiveness Council—a gathering of ministers of science, innovation, trade, and industry—concluded after a 2-day meeting in Brussels. But some observers are warning that the goal will be difficult to achieve. The OA goal is part of a broader set of recommendations in support of open science, a concept that also includes improved storage of and access to research data.

LT-Innovate's insight:

Less restrictive copyright on many types of data sets would enable others to double test results available in "open" scientific papers.

Moreover, forenames and surnames get misspelt in court records and don’t always get picked up even if you know what you’re looking for.
