Learning to read and write don’t have to be independent tasks with a new app called WriteReader, a literacy based learning platform where children from the age of three can create or participate in creating their own books. WriteReader begins by having students create a book and is designed for children to work with adults. The keyboard is specially designed to speak the sound of the letters as they are being typed.

The emphasis of the course is to provide one-on-one mentorship and individual attention to the writing needs of each course member. The course begins with the paragraph and progress on with essay writing. Participants learn to identify and use rhetorical modes and methods of development, to apply writing strategies in developing ideas, to write paragraphs and essays with unity, substance, and clarity; to develop effective sentence structure and variety, and to identify and correct errors in their writing. The major purpose of the goals is to give students the skills required to put together a well-organized research paper.

Test this out and see what you think.  I think it was definitely automated sounding, but not horribly so.

Interesting free tool that could help with section 508 compliance. Only the paid versions of the program have the "natural" voices.

David Swaddle's comment, May 19, 11:09 PM
I think the fact that they went for a professional 'real human' voice on their video says a lot for the product. When the manufacturer won't use it themselves you have to realise that it's not quite there yet.

Paulo Moekotte's curator insight, June 9, 2014 5:49 AM

The task of assessing these skills is unlikely to be straightforward, nor are the results predictable. Data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) on problem-solving skills in a technology-rich environment found that the economic return from having these abilities is lower than from having advanced literacy or numeracy, especially in terms of higher individual wages. Eric Hanushek, the Paul and Jean Hanna senior fellow at Stanford University, notes that more detailed study is needed: “We know that in the highest technology parts of society – which use skills the most – problem-solving is important, but we don’t know how to measure it very precisely or necessarily how to develop [these skills] per se.”
