Providing Feedback | Researched-Based Strategies | Focus on Effectiveness

Providing Feedback | Researched-Based Strategies | Focus on Effectiveness | Language Assessment | Scoop.it

Providing the right kind of feedback to students can make a significant difference in their achievement. There are two key considerations. First, feedback that improves learning is responsive to specific aspects of student work, such as test or homework answers, and provides specific and related suggestions. There needs to be a strong link between the teacher comment and the student's answer, and it must be instructive. This kind of feedback extends the opportunity to teach by alleviating misunderstanding and reinforcing learning. Second, the feedback must be timely. If students receive feedback no more than a day after a test or homework assignment has been turned in, it will increase the window of opportunity for learning. Feedback is a research-based strategy that teachers, and students, can practice to improve their success.

Making it my goal for my online courses.
systerwoody's comment, February 4, 2013 2:30 PM
The challenge is in providing timely feedback spread across 3-4 courses with 25+ students each. Nearly impossible with writing intensive programs, which is a majority of doctoral programs. Sink or swim!

Assessment and Autonomy in Language Learning

Assessment and Autonomy in Language Learning | Language Assessment | Scoop.it
While assessment and autonomy are areas that have been extensively explored in relation to EFL and foreign language learning in general, the nature of the relationship between the two has not been given the coverage that one might expect. This book examines this contested relationship from a number of perspectives in a variety of Higher Education language-learning contexts in Europe and the Far East.

Re-examining Language Testing: A Philosophical and Social Inquiry

Re-examining Language Testing: A Philosophical and Social Inquiry | Language Assessment | Scoop.it
Re-examining Language Testing explores ideas that form the foundations of language testing and assessment. The discussion is framed within the philosophical and social beliefs that have forged the practices endemic in language education and policy today.

From historical and cultural perspectives, Glenn Fulcher considers the evolution of language assessment, and contrasting claims made about the nature of language and human communication, how we acquire knowledge of language abilities, and the ethics of test use.

The book investigates why societies use tests, and the values that have driven changes in practice over time. The discussion is presented within an argument that an Enlightenment inspired view of human nature and advancement is most suited to a progressive, tolerant, and principled theory of language testing and validation.

Covering key topics such as measurement, validity, accountability and values, Re-examining Language Testing provides a unique and innovative analysis of the ideas and social forces that shape the practice of language testing. It is an essential read for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of Applied Linguistics and Education. Professionals working in language testing and language teachers will also find this book invaluable.

Measuring L2 Proficiency

Measuring L2 Proficiency | Language Assessment | Scoop.it
The creation of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) has given rise to interest and debate among policy makers, testers, teachers and researchers alike in the reliability and feasibility of the assessment of second language (L2) proficiency. This volume brings together concrete ideas on identifying and measuring L2 proficiency from different branches of SLA research (psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic, corpus-based, applied linguistics) to contribute to a deeper understanding of what it means to be proficient in an L2.
