It’s surprising that one of Southern California’s favorite movie star haunts also is a place that puts emphasis on family values. At Lake Arrowhead, the stars blend right in with everyday small-town American families.
We were walking the waterfront trail in front of the Lake Arrowhead Resort and ran into one of the town fathers – a guy whose job it was to walk some 20 miles around the lake, checking to make sure the trails were not only passable, but pristine as any semi-exclusive enclave ought to be. He talked about the movie stars who live in Arrowhead as everyday, good people. He talked about his daughter winning the national water-ski championship, and how water-skiing was followed just as closely here as football or basketball might be followed in the Heartland.
Lake Arrowhead is nestled in a magnificent forest of pine, cedar, and dogwood at an altitude of 5100'. In an area described as the "Alps of Southern California," the Lake Arrowhead communities are totally surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest. Lake Arrowhead serves as a gateway to dozens of Forest trails and recreational opportunities. The best way to reach Lake Arrowhead and have an adventure at the same time is via the Rim of the World
With the newly constructed dam at Bear Valley, Redlands farmers now enjoyed an abundant supply of water. However, San Bernardino city engineer, Adolph H. Koebig, needed an irrigation project that would supply water to San Bernardino. In 1890, he designed a massive plan that required the construction of several dams. His plan also called for about sixty miles of inter-connecting tunnels to be cut through the mountains to divert the natural flow of water away from the desert side and into the San Bernardino valley. The project was going to be expensive. He found a group of investors back east in Ohio who were willing to finance the plan. They formed the "Arrowhead Revision Company" with James Gamble of the "Proctor & Gamble Soap Company" as president. Problems with the massive project started almost immediately . Late payments to contractors and lawsuits over "right of ways" brought tunnel drilling to a halt time after time. After the first year, Koebig grew frustrated with the company and quit the project. It wasn't until 1904, after eleven years of drilling tunnels, that construction on the Lake Arrowhead dam actually began. The design called for a 184 foot high, earth filled dam with a concrete core wall. Two steam shovels, two locomotives, miles of track, rail dump cars, and tons of concrete were hauled up the steep Waterman Canyon road to the dam site. By 1908, the unfinished dam had reached a height of 90 feet, and water was allowed to start filling the lake bed. As the water rose, the corewall of the dam started to crack.

We are experiencing an extremely dry winter and we are still in Fire Season as declared by the U.S. Forestry and local fire officials. Please be mindful of fireplaces, ash removal, and “defensible space” surrounding your property.
We have seen a clear Real Estate market improvement in local buyer controlled sales. At the same time our listing inventory is shrinking – especially at the lower end. For all you sellers who have been waiting for the market to “turn around”, this could be a very good time to put your home/cabin on the market. Well priced homes are selling, sometimes with multiple offers – driving prices above asking. When this happens, appraisals move up also – another good sign for sellers. If you would like current market analysis on your Mountain property, please call or e-mail me.
The Mountains around the Lake Arrowhead area in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s were primarily used for logging operations, lumber mills and a limited amount of gold and silver mining. Around 1893, construction began on the dams that created Lake Arrowhead and Grass Valley Lake in an effort to capture water to be sold to the San Bernardino area.
In 1920, a Los Angeles syndicate formed the Lake Arrowhead Company to buy the lake and surrounding property in order to turn the entire area into a unique year-round resort. They constructed the village, three hotels and a nine-hole course on what was originally a cow pasture. Much of the lakeside land was sold for private homes and secluded estates. Many Hollywood stars stayed at the hotels during that era and many of the movie studios used the location for filming movies. But the golf course eventually fell into disuse and returned to the cows.
In the early 1960’s the Lake Arrowhead Development Company, to promote Lake Arrowhead, began updating the original course. The first phase of the project was entrusted to Billy Bell, designer of Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs.
In 1963 a back nine was carved out of the surrounding mountain. At the same time construction on a new clubhouse in the architecturally dramatic A-frame design was begun. Honored guests at the grand opening of the Club House included Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin and Tony Bennett.
In September of 1978, the members of the Lake Arrowhead Country Club purchased the course, clubhouse and tennis facilities from the then owners, California Golf, and turned it into the private, member-owned, equity Country Club that it remains to this day.
