Comics: The $2 buy – The Monkey in the Basement and other delusions | The Forbidden Planet International Blog Log | Ladies Making Comics | Scoop.it

I managed to nab a print copy of Corrine Mucha’s Ignatz-nominated mini-comic before it sold out at Retrofit Comics, but it’s still available digitally from TopShelf for a mere $1.99 and I’d definitely recommend reading it if possible. It’s funny and it’s perceptive, but I suspect it will probably be only funny and perceptive to those who possess the same fantasizing traits that the narrator does. In the three auto-biographical stories presented here, she latches on to first one idea and then another, expanding, elaborating and unravelling it, until it inevitably becomes too big to contain and deflates

Book Review: A WRINKLE IN TIME - THE GRAPHIC NOVEL By Hope Larson

Book Review: A WRINKLE IN TIME - THE GRAPHIC NOVEL By Hope Larson | Ladies Making Comics | Scoop.it
The new graphic novel adaptation of the beloved sci-fi classic is beautiful and current.

Larson manages a difficult task, imbuing a beloved story with her own signature without imposing on L'Engle's original material. Each page is stylish, imaginative, absolutely beautiful and, most impressively, fresh. The graphic novel renders the heart of what we love about A Wrinkle in Time, takes the lessons L'Engle taught - we can't always rely on our parents, our flaws can be our strengths, we should be proud to be different, "you don't have to understand things for them to be," - and makes it all feel wonderfully current and new.

Call for Papers: Women’s Manga in Asia: Glocalizing Different Cultures and Identities

Call for Papers: Women’s Manga in Asia: Glocalizing Different Cultures and Identities | Ladies Making Comics | Scoop.it

In most cultures, comics have targeted younger male readers. In the case of Japanese manga, however, there are works for almost every generation and life style, and gender boundaries have been falling as well. Furthermore, since the turn of the century, a global manga boom has been underway. This has increasingly meant that manga artists are no longer limited to being Japanese people, nor does a manga necessarily have to be a Japanese product. Also, the manga boom has seemingly helped ease the challenges confronting female artists, the result being that more girls and women have begun both creating and reading comics/manga worldwide. Thus, it is crucial to explore the relation between women and comics/manga from ever-broader perspectives world wide, globally as well as locally.
