A Game for Swallows: To Die, to Leave, to Return - Broken Frontier - Comic Book and Graphic Novel News & Community | Reviews | Ladies Making Comics | Scoop.it

Stiflingly intense at times and yet still warm, welcoming and, in places, slightly mischievous as well, 'A Game for Swallows' by Zeina Abirached is an uplifting story about friendship, a sense of community and the strength of ordinary people in adversity.

Exclusive: Dark Horse to publish Adventures of Superhero Girl | Ladies Making Comics | Scoop.it

It started with a doodle: One day, Faith Erin Hicks scribbled a silly little cartoon about a superhero girl, and that got her to thinking that maybe a story about a superhero dealing with the hassles of everyday life could be kind of interesting....

Jill Thompson Answers 15 Questions With Julinda Morrow : Sequential Highway | Ladies Making Comics | Scoop.it

Jill Thompson is a very talented person. She quickly rose through the ranks of comic book pros while working with Neil Gaiman on Sandman. However, Jill set a new creative bar when she introduced her creator-owned property Scary Godmother to the market. It gave birth to a series of wonderful comics, as well as a stage play and two animated TV specials.
Jill has worked for a who’s who of publishers inside and outside the comics community. Her lovely watercolour washes have dazzled and impressed publishers, retailers and fans alike. The secret to Jill’s success is versatility and an unbridled imagination.

Review time! with Bloody Chester | Comics Should Be Good! @ Comic Book Resources | Ladies Making Comics | Scoop.it

This is a pretty keen graphic novel. It’s not what you might expect from a story of the Old West, and Petty does a nice job giving the characters some good layers without forcing it on them....It’s always nice to see different kinds of Westerns, and Bloody Chester is one of those. I can cheerfully Recommend it, even though it’s not necessarily a cheerful comic!

Women in Comics (at First Second) | First Second Books | Ladies Making Comics | Scoop.it

Going to conventions and reading articles about the state of women in comics (and from the amount of questions we get at First Second about how terrible and stressful it must be for us to be working in this clearly massively male-dominated book industry), you’d think that women in this industry were some sort of imperiled endangered creature.

But seriously, you guys: women already here. In twenty-five years, we’ll have to have panels about Men in Comics (that rare breed of creature!).

Bucko Comes to Print With Artist and Writer Annotations » Comics Worth Reading | Ladies Making Comics | Scoop.it

Two of my favorite comic people, Jeff Parker (Underground, X-Men First Class) and Erika Moen (DAR), teamed up to create the webcomic Bucko, a pointed satire of Portland subcultures revolving around a guy who discovers a dead body in a bathroom and the weirdos he runs into as a result.

The New Life of the Comic Book by Lucy Knisley | Ladies Making Comics | Scoop.it

I’m lucky to have come of age now, in a dawning age of graphic novel appreciation, rather than when “being a comic artist” essentially meant that you would be stuck in a room for your whole life, churning out Batman pages for a pittance.

Heaven And The Dead City, Volume 1 by Raine Szramski. This tale of two cities (Tac and Zivvon) is focused at first on Palus, who watched Tac fall during his youth. Following the turmoil, he entered the priesthood in Zivvon but eventually found his own faith lacking…mostly due to the fact that he was a witch who was taught that his innate abilities were not in line with the teachings of the church. iFanboy Upstarts: Emily Carroll

iFanboy Upstarts: Emily Carroll | Ladies Making Comics | Scoop.it

It seems whenever a hot new artist comes onto the scene he’s often compared to previous greats, like calling him “the next Jim Lee” or “the next Steve McNiven.” I’m as guilty of generalizing as anyone, but artists don’t have to be the next incarnation of anyone. They should be their own artist with their own style. And Canadian artist Emily Carroll breaks away from that completely with her storybook style that can veer into both the realm of cute and the real of catastrophic — in a good great way.

Comic Review: The Wonderland Alphabet by Alethea Kontis and Janet K. Lee

Comic Review: The Wonderland Alphabet by Alethea Kontis and Janet K. Lee | Ladies Making Comics | Scoop.it

The Wonderland Alphabet is a simple, but beautiful retelling of the story of Alice. New York Times bestselling author Alethea Kontis has compressed the stories of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass into a format that is fun for the entire family without losing the imagination or enjoyment of the original stories. Starting with the letter “A” and working through the alphabet, each page retells the story of Alice using beautiful poetic language that perfectly captures the magic of the works this book is based on.
