Shake up your Point of View: What Online Students Want Compared to What Institutions Expect

Shake up your Point of View: What Online Students Want Compared to What Institutions Expect | Fabulous Bloggers and Interesting posts | Scoop.it

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine whether a set of instructional practices commonly prescribed to online faculty in the higher education setting were consistent with the expectations of a group of experienced online student participants. Online faculty performance conventions were collected from 20 institutions of higher learning located in the United States. The collective practices yielded three primary domains related to administrative faculty performance expectations in online instruction: Communication, Presence/Engagement, and Timeliness/Responsiveness. Undergraduate participants representing a cross section of colleges and universities in the United States were surveyed to determine their expectations for online faculty as compared to scaled items derived from the lists of participating institutions. The results of this investigation offer practitioners insight into how administrative instructional guidelines relate to the user demands of an informed group of undergraduate online students.

Why asking better questions is often more important than finding answers...

Beth Kanter's curator insight, April 27, 10:35 PM

"The important and difficult job is never to find the right answers, it is to find the right question." Peter Drucker, The Practice of Management (1954)

3. Set aside time every day to sit, think, and write down better questions--about yourself and your organization. Gregersen's 4-24 Project is an attempt to start a movement among leaders to ask better questions. Specifically, Gregersen is urging leaders to take four minutes every day to write out all the questions they have about anything personal or professional.

While there are potential business ROIs in the activity--including, but not limited to, articulating disruptive questions for your company--there are also personal benefits. First and foremost, there's the meditative practice of simply sitting and thinking. For at least four minutes a day, you will (ostensibly) remove your mind from your immediate to-do list, and think only of questions. On more stressful days, these questions will, of course, pertain to your to-do list, as opposed to long-term, big-picture, high-concept thoughts. But even then, you'll at least gain the benefit of venting.

Over time, says Gregersen, you'll be able to do what Christensen did as an HBS student: Review your lists of questions, and notice the patterns.

Dave Wood's curator insight, April 28, 3:09 AM

As a coach you get to ask the disruptive questions that uncover leadership  blind spots.  Some key ideas here which can be enhanced by visually recording your coaching sessions.

via By Nerea Craviotto Over 200 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) participants formed part of the approximately 1500 delegates[1] that attended this First High Level Meeting (HLM) of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation (GPEDC) in Mexico. While delegates agreed on a final Communiqué titled “Building Towards an Inclusive Post-2015 Development Agenda”, which aims to advance effective development co-operation and ensure its inclusion in the Post 2015 global development agenda, there were mixed reactions and criticism from CSOs. The GPCDE and concerns about private sector involvement in development cooperation The Mexico Communiqué is built around five focus areas chosen for this conference (and somewhat arbitrarily by the GPEDC outgoing co-Chairs[2] and Mexico), namely progress since Busan and inclusive development, domestic resource mobilisation, south-south co-operation, middle-income countries and working with the private sector[3]. Little attention was paid to the Progress Report“Making Development Co-operation More Effective” and the achievements and challenges identified since the Busan HLF. Thus, gender equality and women’s empowerment were not part of the priorities for this Ministerial. The CSO Partnership for Development Effectiveness (CPDE) that includes a diverse array of civil society organizations across regions, stated in its press release that, “the Mexican High-Level Meeting does not go far enough for the people”.

The Best Data Minning Tools You Can Use for Free in Your Company | Fabulous Bloggers and Interesting posts | Scoop.it
Data miningor “Knowledge Discovery in Databases” is the  process of discovering patterns in large data sets with artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistics, and database systems.

The overall goal of a data mining process is to extract information from a data set and transform it into an understandable structure for further use.

Here is a simple but fascinating example of how data mining helped dissipate wrong assumptions and conclusions about girls, and take action with tremendous social impact.
