10 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should Be Banned for Children Under the Age of 12 - Huffington Post

10 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should Be Banned for Children Under the Age of 12 - Huffington Post | Laanguage Learning and Technology | Scoop.it

"The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Society of Pediatrics state infants aged 0-2 years should not have any exposure to technology, 3-5 years be restricted to one hour per day, and 6-18 years restricted to 2 hours per day (AAP 2001/13, CPS 2010). Children and youth use 4-5 times the recommended amount of technology, with serious and often life threatening consequences (Kaiser Foundation 2010, Active Healthy Kids Canada 2012)."

Allie Peck's curator insight, March 10, 2014 4:40 PM

While I don't necessarily agree with this in the extent to which it is depicted, there are certainly parts that I wholeheartedly agree with.  Often technologies are over stimulating.  Looking at a computer screen, iPad screen, TV screen, etc. for an extended period of time causes migraines in myself and many other people that I know.  I have seen other research that suggests technology use before bed will make it difficult to fall asleep, and even aids in the development of ADD in children because there is too much to take in.  As this article points out, technology also has an increased cause in depression in adolescence.  Given all of these incredibly negative side effects, why are schools pushing towards a technology centered classroom?

amy loveless's curator insight, June 14, 7:45 PM

Some of the opinions need to be looked in to more, However, it has been my experience working with children from lower SES families, that the children often have undiagnosed/recognized developmental delays prior to entering the public school setting. This is particularly evident in fine motor development and problem solving skills. Many children in this population have limited experiences with activities to help promote these skills (puzzles, coloring, etc), but almost all have access to a smartphone, tablet, game console.

Reflection in the Learning Process, Not As An Add On | Langwitches Blog

Reflection in the Learning Process, Not As An Add On | Langwitches Blog | Laanguage Learning and Technology | Scoop.it

According to Carol Rodgers in  Defining Reflection :Another Look at John Dewey and Reflective Thinking, four criteria emerge from Dewey’s work that characterize reflection.

1. Reflection is a meaning making process that moves a learner from one experience into the next with deeper understanding of its relationships with and its connections to other experiences and ideas.

2. Reflection is a systematic, rigorous way of thinking, with its roots in scientific inquiry.

3. Reflection needs to happen in community, in interaction with others

4. Reflection requires attitudes that value the personal and intellectual growth of oneself and others.
