Why nutritionists might want you to eat part of a Chia Pet

According to nutrition experts, the latest trend in dieting super-foods has been available at stores for years, but because of the way it's been marketed, you might be hesitant to eat it.

According to Lani Jacobs-Banner, a nutrition educator with Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage, many people are unfamiliar with Chia seeds, which are high in protein, fiber, "B" vitamins, calcium, Omega-3 and other important nutrients.

Whether they know it or not, consumers have seen the seeds before - in Chia Pet commercials.

"When you get Chia seeds wet, they form a gel. That's the soluble fiber holding on to a lot of water, so that makes it really easy to spread over that little terra-cotta animal," Jacobs-Banner stated.

She says once the seeds sprout, they can also be eaten, but the whole Chia seed provides more nutritional value.

She says the seeds can help aid in weight loss and have numerous other nutritional benefits.
