Why the Next 10 Years of Educational Technologies will Smash the Last 10

Why the Next 10 Years of Educational Technologies will Smash the Last 10 | Stuff that interests me | Scoop.it

When you think about the advance of technology in society in the last decade, the progress has been phenomenal – just take a look at these examples to see how far we have come in such a short space of time. Now, think about education. Think about the technology in your school ten years ago – perhaps a computer suite with an unreliable bank of PC’s; CD-ROMs; discs; slow, irrelevant programs; staff scared of using IT; and so on.

Ryan Craig: How MOOCs Can Get Their Groove Going … By Getting Smarter | WiredAcademic | Stuff that interests me | Scoop.it
There seems to be general agreement among the cognoscenti that MOOCs don’t have a business model today, but will just as soon as they are accepted for credit towards degrees.
emeraldgirl's insight:

Successful MOOCS need a sound business model in addition to a quality learning experience. While being free to access, many MOOC courses don't have high completion rates.  If MOOCs that have low completion rates had an accredditation outcome with an reputable university, provided more social interaction for students, then maybe their student retention rates would improve.  But then the 'M may need to change to a 'm'.

Why I think (OPEN) courses should be about content creation

Why I think (OPEN) courses should be about content creation | Stuff that interests me | Scoop.it

There are many good reasons for creating content when we are learning. It provides an excellent method of personal curation of ideas, of being able to keep track of your work. It allows for others (beyond an educator) to be able to see and respond to your work. For some it provides encouragement to work a little harder, to polish a little more. It could also provide an excellent opportunity to explore other skills around publishing in numerous formats. These are all quite nice… but not what I’m on about at all.

Donald Clark Plan B: #MOOCs: taxonomy of 8 types of MOOC

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, April 16, 2013 1:45 PM

What are MOOCs?

The future is already here, it’s just not very evenly distributed” said William Gibson, that is certainly true of MOOCs. We have MOOC mania but ‘all MOOCs are not created equal’ and there’s lots of species of MOOC. This is good and we must learn from these experiments to move forward and not get bogged down in old traditionalist v modernist arguments. MOOCs will inform and shape what we do within and without institutions. What is important is to focus on the real needs of real learners.
Taxonomy based on pedagogy
To this end, it is important to define a taxonomy of MOOCs not from the institutional but the pedagogic perspective, by their learning functionality, not by their origins. So here's a starting list of eight:
transferMOOCs
madeMOOCs
synchMOOCs
asynchMOOCs
adaptiveMOOCs
groupMOOCs
connectivistMOOCS
miniMOOCSs
