Good advice for coaches and parents. The athlete as an independent thinker should always be an end point.

Kelsey Goetjen's curator insight, October 12, 2014 9:33 PM

This article is about coaching and eight strategies that coaches can use to help their team and make them a better coach. These strategies include: Repeat, repeat, repeat, use more “ands” then “buts”, use supportive language and empathy, use the sandwich approach when giving criticism, emphasize “I” language when talking to the team, paraphrase and reflect what they tell you, be direct in your messages to the team, do not argue with the referees, teach them to see their own mistakes. The most important thing I learned is that being a coach means that you need to show the athlete how to be self-aware on and off the field, instead of having them be dependent on the coach. I think that’s very important to know when coaching a team. The one strategy that I found interesting was the repeat, repeat, repeat strategy. I know with the coaches that I’ve had in the past, they tell us something once and expect us to learn it and know it.  I was surprised that this article is saying to repeat things that are said, so the kids learn it, I think it’s their responsibility to learn it as quick as possible.  I selected this article because I hope to one day be a coach of team of my own and I wanted to learn more about being a coach and these strategies were a good thing to read about. This information can help me in sports management industry because learning the basic strategies to coaching can help get me started in a coaching career.
