Max Swisher makes a good point about "lolspeak", and his mom shows that his point is valid. To me, it shows that due to technology, we may be going through another evolutionary stage of language, in a manner of speaking, so it should be interesting to see how this resolves itself so that "lolspeak" is actually understood clearly by all. Interesting article.

Yes! Highly recommended. I have used VPN's for years, living in emerging countries where Skype was blocked and many websites or social networks. Now we use it all the time, even in safe locations, especially when looking up financial accounts. I remember just recently accessing a credit card account, without having my VPN on. The next day this account was hacked. VPN's are a must.

Launching Scoop.it for Google+: authorship and posting to Google+ Company pages

Launching Scoop.it for Google+: authorship and posting to Google+ Company pages | La curation en communication web | Scoop.it
While some debate whether Google+ is a ghost town or not, the search giant's social network quietly passed the 1 Billion user mark. That's right: 1 Billion people have a Google+ account which is 2x Twitter's user base and only 15% less than Facebook's. Perhaps more importantly, the +1 button is pressed more than 5 million times a day and 340 million of its users are active.
Scoopiteers didn’t need to wait for those metrics to be public to demand that we add Google+ to the Scoop.it’s sharing options: as our platform is a hub to discover, curate and share content to feed your online channels, it’s natural to offer as many distribution options as possible. So today, after integrating  with Facebook profiles and pages, LinkedIn profiles, groups and pages, Twitter and many other social platform such as Wordpress or Tumblr, we’re excited to launch our integration with Google+ with 2 new features:

Adding Google+ Company pages as a sharing option to Scoop.it

How to Search the Invisible Web

How to Search the Invisible Web | La curation en communication web | Scoop.it
While the pages and media found via simple searches may seem unendingly huge at times, what is submerged and largely unseen – often referred to as the invisible web or deep web – is in fact far, far bigger.

Via Beth Dichter

Beth Dichter's curator insight, April 1, 7:41 AM

Many students are not aware that there is an "invisible web" that may be searched, one that is not quite so easy to find but has more information than Google provides (which tends to look at the "Surface Web"). According to this post Google has indexed "roughly 200 terabytes" while the size of the Internet is estimated at "5 million terabytes" of information.

The post provides a look at what is not found through Google (or other common search engines) and then shares:
* A list of Open Access Journal Databases (with over 10 databases with descriptions)

* A list of Invisible Search Engines. Quoting from the post "The search engines that deliver results from the invisible web are distinctly different. Narrower in scope, these deep web engines tend to access only a single type of data…deep web searches tend to be more thoughtful in their initial query requirements." Ten search engines are listed and there is a short description for each.

* A list of subject-specific databases in the following areas

     - Art & Design

     - Business

     - Legal & Social Services

     - Science & Technology

     - Healthcare

Although this post is geared to students in college there are resources that may be used by students in middle or high school provided, and as teachers it is important for us to learn more about this "invisible web" and to share it with our students.

Manage distractions, not time
Lisa Armstrong's curator insight, February 21, 3:03 AM

Hi folks, as discussed during our workshop for this week, I will not be on campus next Wednesday and so here is your article and your review questions for Week 4.

Take a look at this article and then complete the following questions:

1. From this article are there any hints and or tips that you want to incorporate to enhance your productivity?

2. To support you in enhancing your personal productivity, what examples of business technology are you currently using that could be used more effectively?

3. What other examples of business technology could you employ to enhance your personal productivity?

4. What are the examples or situations where business technology distracts you or negatively impacts your personal productivity?

This YouTube clip may provide further insight into using business technology to enhance your productivity in your business:

 http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sddJvGAtZEg

And for the unit we usually work on after the break, the WHS unit, you can complete the following questions as review in preparation for next week's activity-

What is the name of the legislation that we need to comply in terms of WHS in the workplace? Is this legislation commonwealth or state legislation?Who is the government agency in NSW that supports compliance of this legislation? What section of the Act outlines the 'primary duty of care' responsibilities we have as a business manager/business owner? What does the 'primary duty in care' mean? What do you believe the 'PCBU' may have to do to meet its duty of care?Who are the "officers" in your workplace? What might they have to do to show they are using 'due diligence'?Where would you find information to assist in doing what would be considered to be 'reasonably practicable'?

We have already covered quite a few of these aspects of WHS during our learning session. Reviewing the questions on WHS, as above, will be good preparation for next week's activity.

I look forward to working with you then.

Have a good week!

Tiffany Crosby's curator insight, February 21, 11:21 AM

7 Qualities of Highly Effective Content Curators

7 Qualities of Highly Effective Content Curators | La curation en communication web | Scoop.it
Every time I visit the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, I see something I’ve never seen before. In fact, t’s considered the most influential museum of modern art in the world. With that in mind, meet Klaus Biesenbach. Klaus holds the title “Chief Curator at Large” at MoMA. If you’ve visited the MoMA and walked away impressed (like I have), Klaus has a lot to do with that.

As content curators, we should all aspire to be like Klaus. After all, wouldn’t it be great if our content collections drew as much interest, respect and admiration as the collections at MoMA? In order to achieve this feat, we need to become highly effective content curators. In other words, we need to curate Internet content as we would fine art.

Let’s consider seven habits of content creation that would make Klaus Biesenbach proud. Continue reading →
