Crostata or Italian jam tart: a treasure recipe where the sum is greater than the parts

Crostata or Italian jam tart: a treasure recipe where the sum is greater than the parts | La Capriola - Take a Break in Le Marche, Italy | Scoop.it

About a decade ago I traveled to Italy to take a cooking class. Of the many things I brought home from that trip, none is more cherished than my recipe for Italian jam tart.

The first tart we made — technically a crostata — was filled with fig jam, but these simple pastries made from butter, sugar and flour really can be filled with anything.

This is one of those treasured recipes where the sum is greater than the parts! The list of ingredients is short and basic. For that first tart I made, the secret was a beautiful jar of homemade fig jam scented with lemon zest and almonds. I was incredulous that something so easy to make could taste so good.

As I learned in Italy, the real secret to the tart is using the best quality jam you can find. I look for jam made with only a bit of sugar, and I prefer fig, apricot, cherry, strawberry and raspberry. [...]

Ingredients -  Start to finish: 1 hour - Servings: 6

13 tablespoons (1 stick plus 5 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar1/4 teaspoon orange blossom water or vanilla extract1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour1/8 teaspoon sea saltGenerous 1/2 cup (about 6.5 ounces) fig, apricot, cherry or berry jam Directions

Quality Le Marche bike rental hire for cycling holidays in Italy

Quality Le Marche bike rental hire for cycling holidays in Italy | La Capriola - Take a Break in Le Marche, Italy | Scoop.it

We have experienced ever increasing numbers of guests who want to bring their own machines or have asked us with help in arranging an Italian bike rental in Le Marche and we have become more and more frustrated.
The cyclists who come on holiday to Marche tend to be cycle enthusiasts who expect the best and there just hasn’t been a high end rental facility available.
Initially we contacted a franchise who operate cycle rentals throughout Italy but found their delivery costs and bike hire prices to be very high, also wherever possible we want our guests to shop locally and we want the local community to benefit especially when they are able to offer a quality service.
From our earliest days here in Le Marche region, when in doubt we have always asked a local. Like most villages in Italy we have a local bike club who, on a weekly basis, don lycra and strive for burning thighs and chafing, in our case we contacted Marco from the local bike club, who has helped us with the supply of high end bike rentals.
If you know anything about the local Le Marche terrain or have read about the great routes via our cycling holidays page then you may have decided to come and do a bit of riding and will want a bike hire. [...]

Introduction to skiiing in the Italian Appenines, Le Marche, Italy

Introduction to skiiing in the Italian Appenines, Le Marche, Italy | La Capriola - Take a Break in Le Marche, Italy | Scoop.it

Having experienced skiiing for the very first time, I would like to share some information about Sassotetto, high in the Sibillini mountains near Sarnano, Le Marche, and part of the Italian Appenines. For novice skiers, this resort is ideal since it is relatively inexpensive and accessible. It is possible to stay at the resort itself - there are several hotels, although we chose to stay near Sarnano and take the daily shuttle bus to the resort. There are two main centres at Sasso Tetto; Sasso Tetto and La Maddalena. We went to the latter and having walked the short distance from the bus to the ski school, enquired about an hour's lesson.
We were surprised that the lesson price was so reasonable; €30 for an hour for an individual but €40 for two people (See the detailed Sibillini Ski School price list). Our instructor was Domenico; although he probably spoke a little English we opted for our lesson in Italian. The hire of ski boots, skis and sticks was a reasonable €10 per person for the day, and once we were kitted out, he took us to the nursery slope for some tuition.

How we found our little hideaway in Le Marche

How we found our little hideaway in Le Marche | La Capriola - Take a Break in Le Marche, Italy | Scoop.it

What if you bump into a little gem and are able to make it your permanent holiday hideaway. That's what happened to us. With no renovations needed, but just the furnishing and putting up with electricity, the house was ours to spend for short and longer stays.

Our house is part of a little borgo with 6 houses which means a quiet place but not being all alone because of our extremely friendly Italian and British neighbours. Ideal to maintaining your Italian and feeling comfortable being able to speaking English.

Le Marche is breathtakingly beautifull with rolling, green hills as far as the eye can reach, which already can be enjoyed by just sitting on the terrace or experience while walking one of the countless hiking trails. Explore the Golla di Infernaccio in the nearby Monti Sibillini National Park, or start the Orange trail running right along our house.

After we fell in love with this amazingly wonderfull place we decided other people should be able to enjoy it as well. Many people ended up staying here and enjoyed their vacation. Bellini: try it with prosecco and peaches of the Aso Valley | La Capriola - Take a Break in Le Marche, Italy | Scoop.it

The Bellini was first made in 1948 by Giuseppi Cipriani at Harry’s Bar in Venice. The name was derived after 15th century artist Giovanni Bellini and in Italy a traditional Bellini is made by macerating white peaches in white wine . Many recipes use champagne instead of white wine, but we favor the now accepted standard of Prosecco.  Enjoy a Bellini with a light snack or by itself to start a lovely meal.
