Curation vs. Blogging: The Difference Is In The Focus

Curation vs. Blogging: The Difference Is In The Focus | La brecha de la complejidad | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If curation is all about finding and sharing great content, what's the difference with what so many bloggers have been doing until now?

The difference, according to Deanna Dahlsad at Kitsch-Slapped, is in the focus. While bloggers often cover just about anything that intercepts their online wanderings, curators are characterized by a strong focus on a specific topic.

Here is a key passage from her article: "Many bloggers spend their time selecting what they consider the best of what other people have created on the web and post it at their own sites, just like a magazine or newspaper.

Or they provide a mix of this along with writing or otherwise creating their own content. Not to split hairs, but curation involves less creation and more searching and sifting; curation’s more a matter of focused filtering than it is writing.

Because content curation is expected to be based on such focused filtering, it begins far more based on topic selection.

This is much different from blogging, where bloggers are often advised to “just begin” and let their voice and interests accumulate over time to eventually reveal a primary theme.

...

Some collectors just collect what they like as they stumble into it. …Sometimes, collectors just keep piling up stuff, no matter what it is. Even if this isn’t hoarding, it’s not-so-much of a purposeful pursuit.

But professional curators, those who manage collections for museums or other organizations, and serious collectors, they maintain a specific focus.

And rather than stumbling into items, they continually seek for specific items.

The definition dictates the curation — and everything from funding to their continued employment is based on how well their collection meets the collection’s definition.

While blogging success may be thought of in many different ways, the success of content curation lies in how well you define, search/research, and stick to your subject."

Rightful. 8/10

Leading Ethically Through Complexity: How to Prepare Leaders

Leading Ethically Through Complexity: How to Prepare Leaders | La brecha de la complejidad | Scoop.it

Developing Business Leader Future

How to help Leaders prepare to handle Complexity

It seemed difficult for some readers to imagine a single leader being able to handle complexity so responsibly in a fast-paced global business arena.

Practical Ways to Help Leaders Lead Ethically Through Complexity:

1. Help them learn to embrace complexity

2. Help them learn to respect others

3. Help them learn to respect differences

4. Help them learn to respect the environment

5. Help them understand global trends

6. Help them understand their ethical responsibilities

7. Help them learn to think like a global leader

8. Help them understand the importance of learning and adapting

9. Help them understand the importance of service to others and society

10. Help them embrace social media and socially connected learning

Managing complexity: a practical example

In Switzerland, there are more than 4'000 contaminated sites needing remediation in the next decades. Some of the remediation projects are especially large – over 100 Millions € - and highly complex. On behalf of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), the authors developed a guideline (in press) to support the authorities which are challenged by such complex projects.
After having identified the success factors and key challenges of three sites being currently remediated, a project typology, based on four dimensions (technical, legal, socio-relational and management), has been developed. Further, a complexity grid, inspired by the project complexity model of Kathleen Hass, has been developed, allowing a qualitative identification of the main sources of complexity. Finally, success factors, recommendations and tools for key elements like goal-setting, decision-making and steering, stakeholder-management, project-organisation, participation and communication, planning, uncertainty and risk-management, culture and leadership, are suggested.

Snippets - An essay on complex adaptive systems

Snippets - An essay on complex adaptive systems | La brecha de la complejidad | Scoop.it

Complexity science is not a single theory. It is a combination of various theories and concepts from a variety of disciplines—biology, anthropology, economy, sociology, management and others that studies complex adaptive systems (CAS).

All three terms in the name CAS are significant in the definition of a CAS:

1.- Complex implies diversity, many connections among a wide variety of elements.

2.- Adaptive suggests the capacity to alter or change, the ability to learn from experience.

3.- A system is a set of connected or interdependent things. From this definition, it is possible to approach organizations, communities and societies as complex adaptive systems.

Is ‘complexity’ the key to economic growth? | La brecha de la complejidad | Scoop.it
Two economists, Ricardo Hausmann of Harvard and Cesar Hidalgo of MIT, have just released their 364-page “Atlas of Economic Complexity,” which claims to be the best model yet for predicting how much nations will grow in the future. So what’s the secret?.
