Sugary sports drinks could be causing athletes to slow down

Sugary sports drinks could be causing athletes to slow down | Kickin' Kickers | Scoop.it
Researchers analysed athletes at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and said their dental health was 'on a par with that of non-athletes living in deprived communities.'

Brett Fox's curator insight, October 14, 2014 9:00 PM

I learned that sugary sports drinks negatively impact the performance of elite athletes during competition. A report found the dental health of athletes compared to that of non-athletes living in deprived communities. Tooth decay affects up to 75% of athletes, and a third of the medical problems at the 2012 London Olympics were dental-related. I found it interesting that athletes were more likely to suffer from eating disorders as they tried to control their weight. I was surprised to read that athletes from rich countries were no less likely to be affected by dental problems than those from poor countries. I selected this article because I wanted to learn about how athletes were affected by sugary sports drinks and what experts thought about sports drinks in general. This information would be very helpful in the sport management industry because if I were to become a personal trainer, I could educate athletes on the effects of sugary sports drinks on their health and what alternatives they could use to benefit their performance.

Jackson Hoffman's curator insight, October 14, 2014 10:07 PM

1: I learned that athletes who follow specific diets and drink sugary sports drinks are getting negatively affected towards their health.

2: I found it interesting that athletes are suffering from eating disorders rather than benefiting from a set diet.

3: I selected this article since having a strong knowledge on dieting will allow me to help others as well as myself when exercising.

4: This will help me since now I know what is affecting athletes negatively.

In the sparse classroom, the kindergartners got distracted by other students or even themselves. But in the decorated one, children were more likely to be distracted by the visual environment and spent far more time “off task.”

Social media puts body-conscious girls off sport

Lauren Sheehan's curator insight, October 14, 2014 11:42 PM
1. What did you learn?I did not have any idea the influence that social media had on girls in athletics. It makes me more aware of what I see when I am looking through my social media news feeds. I notice a lot more of the models in advertisements and how photoshop has become so much more popular in our society.  2. What information did you find interesting and educational?I found it interesting that girls as young as age 13 were effected by social media and body image. I don't think girls that young have even grown into their bodies enough to know they are uncomfortable. I also found it interesting that there were surveys taken to address this issue. I didn't know it was an issue until I read this article.  3. Why did you select the article?I selected the article because it is relevant to my gender and age. It is important with an interest in social media and athletics that I know what to post and what to avoid. With my age, it is popular to be employed as a team or company's social media manager because I understand different types of technology because I grew up with them.  4. How will this information help you in the sport management industry? It will help to know what is important to filter when posting on a team's social media page. If you want to attract a younger female crowd, you would need advertisement that does not involve an outrageous look on their body image. It is important to know the crowd you're advertising toward.
