Review of Peter Underwood's New Book "First Mover"

Review of Peter Underwood's New Book "First Mover" | Korean News & Media Trends | Scoop.it

It will be interesting to see how Korea reacts to this book by one of the most 'embedded' foreigners in the culture.  Yonsei's Underwood International College is named after this man's family.

You may need to create an account WIth Korea Business Central to view this book review

WHO

My name is Ken Morrison. I primarily teach media courses within the communication department of Linton Global College (Hannam University) in Daejeon South Korea. I have enjoyed teaching in South Korea enough to stay for more than three years. Some of my students amaze me every week.

WHAT & WHY

I am not an expert, but I do enjoy using my communications background and experience as a reporter and TV producer in the USA to analyze global news. This site is created primarily as an extension of my interests and hobby of staying up to date on important news surrounding me. I am hopeful that it will also be helpful to Korean students or newcomers to Korea, as well as those observing from a distance.

HOW

I do not intend on sharing daily news nor even weekly news. Yet, when recurring news maintains near the top of peoples' minds for extended periods of time, I will share a few different professional perspecives as well as my own.

I will do my best to strike a nice balance between critical thinking and respectful understanding of the many pressures that Korea faces in this rapidly changing era.

I highly encourage and embrace feedback and suggested additions to this site!

P.S.  If you (or a high school student who you care about) is considering attending a university where all instruction and homework is in English, you might consider watching these student-produced videos by my students about life at Linton Global College.

SAT cancelled in all of Korea due to cheating!!!

SAT cancelled in all of Korea due to cheating!!! | Korean News & Media Trends | Scoop.it
The May 4 sessions of the SAT were scrapped across South Korea after questions from the test were found circulating in test-prep centers, throwing many students' college-preparation plans into disarray.
Ken Morrison's insight:

Wow. This is going to be big. I feel really bad for the thousands of students who did nothing wrong.  No student can take the SAT in Korea this spring because of suspected cheating among some.

Ken's Key Takeaway:

It is interesting to me that Korea has the fastest internet connections in the world, the highest ratio of citizen : high speed device, yet has a very small percentage of the content created on the internet.  I do feel that some of it is cultural, some of it is due to Tom McPhail's ETC theory

Should I stay or should I go? Expats mull future as Korean tensions rise

Should I stay or should I go? Expats mull future as Korean tensions rise | Korean News & Media Trends | Scoop.it
Would you stay in a country whose neighbor was warning of an imminent "moment of explosion"? It's a question many expats in South Korea are pondering.
Ken Morrison's insight:

Yes.  CNN was able to find some scared foreigners.  However, they failed to state how long each of these interviewees had spent in Korea.  That is an important factor that most of us expats ask when choosing if we should consider the source to be credible. It is just a variable, but it is an important one.  Also, there have always been gas masks and instructions in subways. I do not feel that it is responsible journalism to leave that fact out.  It believe that the inclusion of the gas masks makes a reader assume that it is a reaction to the thread of North Korea.

Kids of Tiger Moms Get Worse Grades and Are More Depressed | Korean News & Media Trends | Scoop.it
When Amy Chua’s book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother came out in 2011, it sparked  controversy among many people but especially psychologists and experts in  child development.
Ken Morrison's insight:

Ken's Key Takeaway:

I am sharing this because I would like to hear your opinions.  I don't pretend to be an expert, but I feel that this is worth discussing.

Korean education is amazing in some ways. There are some negative results. I have lived in Korea for four years and I have been in both public and private classrooms from kindergarten through university.  I like many aspects of the system.  Yet, I also witness the outcome of students trying to adjust during university years after being in the high-pressure homes.  Some make the adjustment better than others.

Ken Morrison's insight:

Thank you to my student, JY for sharing this link with the clas.  This article and the documentary at the end of the link share about the intense 'training' that young pop stars must go through in order to get into a K-pop band.

Ken

Jy Park's curator insight, April 25, 11:14 PM

Google News is interested in Korean Pop stars and looked at this topic in deeper sense. They handled about negative aspect of K-pop stars. Many children in South Korea are dreaming of becoming K-pop stars and therefore there is a negative aspect like this situation. I think this cultural changes and globalization of media might have caused this situation.

Ken Morrison's comment, April 26, 4:12 PM
Hi JY. I read your responses on our website from yesterday. Scoop.it and I like to see snowball efforts. Slow, steady, thoughtful scoops. The worst thing that you can do is drop two or three links in about five minutes and then disappear for five days. I like what I see with your insights. This has to be more than just a hobby site. Your links and insights must share what you are learning to prepare for the Korean media industry. You can do it. Let me know how I can help.

it's great to know and understand about N.Korea. because even many south korean like me, do not know what and how it really is. thank you for this source:)
Yeaeun Kim's curator insight, April 29, 6:38 AM

it's great to know and understand about N.Korea. many travlers from western countries can be allowed to go in to North Korea but we, the ordinary South Korean never ever can visit N.Korea. it makes me sad.

therefore, this video shows me that i've never seen such as views of cities, people on a street, etc. While watching this video, i thought all of the words from that north korean tour guide are full of propaganda. it's not a "tour guide"

Ken Morrison's insight:

I like the analogy that this is the same music pattern to the same old song and dance that has been played for decades.  Yes, the volume is turned up, but the song is identical and the lyrics are similar.  Will we dance like pupets on a string?  Stay tuned.
