Digital media get top marks as they bring a new kind of learning into the classroom

Digital media get top marks as they bring a new kind of learning into the classroom | Knowledge sharing and video | Scoop.it

"...institutions around the UK are bringing students new learning experiences via digital media. A recent example saw 9,000 students from 140 schools watch a webcast of Tim Crouch’s play I, Cinna, based on the misadventures of a lowly character from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, then writing their own poems and prose in response and taking part in a live Q&A with the actor and director.

The project was the result of a collaboration between Cisco, the Royal Shakespeare Company, JANET (a government-funded research and education network) and university sector college Ravensbourne."

Includes key findings of an online survey of academic selection criteria for online video (n=99:
• Most academics make specific searches for resources rather than engage in general searches on an ongoing basis
• Who created the resource is important
• Knowing the disciplinary context of a learning resource is useful
• Quality is more important than format
• Mixed views on user ratings (e.g. Amazon style stars)
• Copyright not regarded as important if used for educational purposes
• Most popular sites/search methods are Google, Google Scholar, YouTube and Wikipedia

Online Video Tutorials Improve Learning of Difficult Concepts in Undergraduate Analytical Chemistry

Online Video Tutorials Improve Learning of Difficult Concepts in Undergraduate Analytical Chemistry | Knowledge sharing and video | Scoop.it

"A tutoring video was provided by the instructor for the identified problems and recorded as short video clips. Each video took 20–30 min to make (using Camtasia and exported to Shockwave Flash). The tutoring...specifically addressed key information provided by the question, how the problem is analyzed, and how this skill is applied to similar questions. The main goal was to help students grasp the knowledge point and also learn how to apply it....[R]esults...indicate that online video tutoring delivered to students through Blackboard effectively helps students master knowledge points and improve their performance in an upper-level chemistry course. This technique is especially beneficial to the average and lower-performing students in the class..."

An interesting and useful study that provides further evidence to support of the efficacy of video-enhanced learning.

Welcome to Knowledge Sharing and Video, the web curation site for my research into the use of web-based video in education.

The ever increasing quantity of openly accessible video on the web means that finding suitable online video to support teaching and learning can be an onerous task. My interest is in exploring how educators use and share web-based video to support teaching and learning, and seeking means to improve discovery.

Knowledge Sharing and Video collects and comments on innovations in the pedagogic use of video, the development of communities of practice in this field and new, relevant research findings.
