Welcome to Knowledge Sharing and Video, the web curation site for JISC Digital Media's Edmediashare project. The ever increasing quantity of openly accessible video on the web means that finding suitable online video to support teaching and learning can be an onerous task. Edmediashare aims to improve findability by encouraging educators and learners to share the open online video they find useful together with information on how they use these resources. Knowledge Sharing and Video collects and comments on innovations in the pedagogic use of video, the development of communities of practice in this field and new, relevant research findings. Classic films, many of which are free to view (with some advertising), are collected here on this auto-generated YouTube channel. The channel features full length versions of 'The Lodger: A Story of London Fog' (A Hitchcock, UK, 1927), 'The Cabinet of Dr Caligari' (R Wiene, Ger., 1920) and 'Man With a Movie Camera' (D Vertov, USSR, 1929).
The Internet Archive added TV News to its collection yesterday, (Tues.18th Sept). The Archive has captured all (US) news from 20 channels. This is the start of something big and and I hope they will be adding news broadcasts from other countries soon, it is also good to see BBC Worldwide included in the aggregated content. There is a lot here and to make best use, you would probably need to have a question, topic or search strategy prepared. You can search by keyword, time, program and TV network. There is also a useful word cloud that show recent searches. According Brewster Khale, founder of the internet Archive, this is just the beginning. The copyright debate that is likely to ensue should also prove interesting. The Public Domain Review showcases a growing collection of films, mainly from the Internet Archive. Categories include : Clips · Shorts · Silent Features · Talkie Features Animation · Comedy · Drama · Thriller/Noir · Horror · Fantasy/Adventure · Documentary · Ephemeral;which can be also be filterd by decade/period. Each film is supported by useful notes and comments. which will be helpful for further research. I would suggest; if you are remixing video - this would be an excellent source from which to draw content. It also features a very early remix - Charles A. Ridley's - Nazi Style Lambeth Walk.

Jeff Haywood, Vice Principal, Knowledge Management, University of Edinburgh discusses his institutions recent decision to offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

A recent example saw 9,000 students from 140 schools watch a webcast of Tim Crouch’s play I, Cinna, based on the misadventures of a lowly character from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, then writing their own poems and prose in response and taking part in a live Q&A with the actor and director. The project was the result of a collaboration between Cisco, the Royal Shakespeare Company, JANET (a government-funded research and education network) and university sector college Ravensbourne."

With new online platforms offering opportunities for teaching and learning released almost on a daily basis it can be challenging to find out which is best suited to your teaching and learning needs, and how to choose which platform to use and when. This one hour session explores new and emerging developments in online digital media technologies (like YouTube, Facebook, Scoop.it), how they can enrich learning, teaching and assessment, and presents practical selection methods. Contributors include: Tim O'Riordan (JISC Digital Media) Adam Richards (Bridgend College), and Theo Kuechel (Independent Learning Advisor)
At a recent workshop held at the Royal College of Music, Janet ( the UK’s research and education network) demonstrated technologies that enable high quality, synchronous, live music coaching, rehearsal and performance that also has potential for teaching in Drama and Medicine.
Earlier this month the Recording and Augmenting Lectures for Learning project (REC:all), held a well-attended webinar which set out their draft pedagogical framework for lecture capture.
"Findings indicate that a very large percentage of students who watch the videos use them as a helpful tutoring resource and receive several types of improved-learning benefits including improvement in topic understanding, better grades, and greater ease of learning. The weakest students are especially benefited, with significantly reduced course withdrawal rates. Use of video lectures occurs when alternative study resources with the same topic content are always available."
If you use YouTube playlists, to organise and manage videos, you may wish to try out a new feature which will enable you to add intros and outros to the videos in the playlist to " weave individual videos together into a bigger story" You can create these either as recorded 'to camera' pieces using your built in webcam or as text intros, there are a number of different styles and background effects to choose from. There is also an option to add background music. The tool can be found in your Playlist settings in the Video Manager, click: Edit Playlist to use. If students are creating playlist this facility might help them to think crtically about the content and sequences in a playlist.

An interesting paper on developments in the field of sentiment analysis as applied to user-generated web videos. The authors see potential in applying their methods to film analysis.
A free one day workshop is being held at the University of Bristol on Thursday 20th September 2012 to focus on the legal, ethical and other related issues of using recordings with learning and teaching.
"By incorporating audio and video podcasts into the computers and writing classroom, we are better preparing our students for jobs working with podcasting and other digital media, and also providing them a way to reconsider and reapply traditional writing concepts in deeper, more effective ways."

Do you have a funding story to tell? In 2008 Ithaka S+R published "Sustainability and Revenue Models for Online Academic Resources" a report on the lessons learned from publically funded and commercial online projects. The report explored different possible revenue models that could be applied to digital content and showcased projects that were implementing them. They are now seeking new 'sustainability stories' and plan to publish an update in autumn 2012.
