Are MOOCs all they’re hyped up to be? Two enthusiasts share their experiences

My name is Erna and I’m an intern at Saffron Interactive. After reading our last blog post about MOOCs, I became curious and thought I’d give it a go and enrol in one of them. After browsing the catalogues of courses starting in October on Edx, Coursera, Udacity and CourseSites, I signed up for Crafting an Effective Writer: Tools of the Trade.

Credit transfer system could give Europe edge in Moocs market

Credit transfer system could give Europe edge in Moocs market | Social Learning - MOOC - OER | Scoop.it

The European Credit Transfer System provides a legal basis for the creation of an online marketplace for academic credit that could be exploited by massive open online course providers, a conference has heard.

Hannes Klöpper, managing director of the new German Mooc platform iversity, also said he believed that Europe’s burgeoning community of online providers was better placed than US organisations to work with universities and offer academic credit to students.

Speaking at Making Sense of the Moocs, a conference held in Brussels on 10 October, Mr Klöpper unveiled a plan that he believed could lead to European platforms offering a large range of for-credit courses within two years.

Veduca Builds Out its Lead as the Latin American MOOC Platform

Veduca Builds Out its Lead as the Latin American MOOC Platform | Social Learning - MOOC - OER | Scoop.it

After covering the two new MOOC players in the European market, let’s switch continents and go to Brazil, where Veduca is taking up steam in its mission to conquer the LatAm education market.

Founded in 2011 Veduca started by subtitling video lectures from leading universities which were freely available as part of the OpenCourseWare movement. The idea was to give Brazilians access to lectures in English as only 2% of those learners understand English well enough to make use of those videos according to Carlos Souza, one of the founders of Veduca.

After initially bootstrapping their startup and showing quick user growth, the team was able to raise their first $750k seed round led by Mountain do Brazil (now Bolt Ventures) with the participation of 500 Startups and Macmillan Digital Education. This week Veduca raised a $500k  follow-up round from the same investors.

While the funding is only a tiny fraction of what we have seen in the rounds of Coursera, edX, and Udacity, Veduca managed to grow its offering to over 5,700 video lectures from 17 universities, four of them from Brazil. And here it gets really interesting.

MOOC mucking…

MOOC mucking… | Social Learning - MOOC - OER | Scoop.it

So, it’s time to see if this experiment is working.   Which experiment?  MOOCs  (Massive Open Online Courses).  I explained how these work (or at least the Harvard/MIT/UC Berkeley version, called edX) and explained that MIT also has had open courseware for more than a decade.

The big boy in MOOCs is Coursera.  This for-profit venture has accumulated 5 million student subscribers this year.  edX, the non-profit MOOC version from MIT and Harvard, has some 1.3 million who may be benefiting.  (I will describe the various attributes of the programs below- you can then decide if these are succeeding or not.) Most of the users are in the US; edX has some 20% from outside the US (12% India, 9% Africa).

The question is the what is the goal-  to educate folks, to reduce the cost of education, or to generate additional funds for teachers and institutions.  After all, it is clear that watching a computer monitor (which at that point resembles a TV screen, if you consider it) is not quite an engaging method to involve students. So, it’s not surprising that only about 10% of those who sign up for a course manage to complete it.

To MOOC, or Not to MOOC?

To MOOC, or Not to MOOC? | Social Learning - MOOC - OER | Scoop.it

We all know that MOOCs are a hot topic, but what some may not know are the critical questions schools should ask before they decide whether or not to start a MOOC. In this video, I preview my upcoming session, “To MOOC, or Not to MOOC,” at EDUCAUSE 2013. Thanks for watching, and I will see you at EDUCAUSE!

Katie Blot, President of Education Services, will present at EDUCAUSE 2013 in a session called “To MOOC, or Not to MOOC” from 1:30-2:20 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, in Meeting Room 209A/B.

MOOCs: What you need to know about this growing trend

MOOCs: What you need to know about this growing trend | Social Learning - MOOC - OER | Scoop.it

Four letters might be reshaping higher education as we know it: MOOC.

During the last two years, massive open online courses have taken the world of distance education by storm.

Why? Because they are free and open to anyone with access to the Internet. And major employers are supporting the top providers, who already have many of the big names in higher education as partners.

Europe’s MOOC experiment accelerates in Berlin « Educational Technology

Europe’s MOOC experiment accelerates in Berlin « Educational Technology | Social Learning - MOOC - OER | Scoop.it

There are now at least six organisations in Europe that host MOOCs – UnX, Miríada X, OpenupEd, OpenCourseWorld, Iversity and FutureLearn. Since there are no geographic barriers for MOOCs, they compete directly with other providers around the world. Coursera, the largest provider worldwide, hit four million student sign-ups in July 2013 (less impressive than it sounds as MOOC providers tend to experience high drop-out rates). It offers 460 courses in 13 languages – though the bulk are in English – in partnership with about 80 education institutions, including top-end universities in Europe.
