Stop saying technology is causing social isolation

Stop saying technology is causing social isolation - Digital Culturist - Medium

Social media, and smartphones for that matter, only contributes to make our social experiences richer by connecting us with people in new ways. I’m sure many of you have met lots of interesting people. I sure have. Thanks to social media, I’ve been able to meet people that are now close friends of mine. And when I’m out, I like to open Twitter and check how they are, what they are doing, if I have something to say that may interest them. Heck, I even met my girlfriend on Twitter years ago.

"This book will introduce readers to many disciplinary perspectives on behavior that is both collective and intelligent.  By collective, we mean groups of individual actors, including, for example, people, computational agents, and organizations.  By intelligent, we mean that the collective behavior of the group exhibits characteristics such as, for example, perception, learning, judgment, or problem solving. "

The article comes from an extremely credible source, and is an extensive and comprehensive study into the topic.

Thierry Belleguic's curator insight, September 7, 2013 11:37 AM

Despite the significant increase in the number and type of international activities – from branch campuses to MOOCs and aggressive international student recruitment – many institutional efforts appear to be launched without a clear idea of best practices or how specific activities might be productive and meaningful for a particular institution.

Empirical knowledge of how and why institutions expand these activities, and whether they are successful, remains largely anecdotal.

Why do universities embark on new projects and activities that engage the institution outside of its national boundaries? What motivates individuals and their institutions to include transnational relations among their core strategic interests and concerns when considering the future path for success? Why are more foreign students and faculty recruited and why are curricula and research agendas more international and global in scope?

The motivation of institutions, and their leaders, appears to be multiple and complex. As part of our larger effort to generate a taxonomy of different kinds of international engagement by universities, and reflecting a recent research paper published as part of a larger project based at the University of California, Berkeley, we offer here an exploration of possible institutional logics and rationales used to justify what are sometimes significant financial and institutional commitments.

The Open Content Program provides free, unrestricted access to the Getty's digital resources.

Why Open Content?

The Getty adopted the Open Content Program because we recognized the need to share images of works of art for free and without restriction, so that all those who create or appreciate art—scholars, artists, art lovers, and entrepreneurs—will have greater access to high-quality digital images for their studies and projects. Art inspires us, and imagination and creativity lead to artistic expressions that expand knowledge and understanding. The Getty sincerely hopes that people will use the open content images for a wide range of activities and that they will share the fruits of their labors with others.

What's in Open Content?

Currently, there are more than 87,000 images from the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Getty Research Institute available through the Open Content Program, including more than 72,000 from the Research Institute's Foto Arte Minore archive, which features photographs of the art and architecture of Italy over 30 years by German photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1913–1988). Other images include paintings, drawings, manuscripts, photographs, antiquities, sculpture, decorative arts, artists' sketchbooks, watercolors, rare prints from the 16th through the 18th century, and 19th-century architectural drawings of cultural landmarks. Over time, images from the Getty Conservation Institute will be added, as well as more images from the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Getty Research Institute.

Imagining the Future City: London 2062 I #smartcities #sustainability #freebook | knowledge network | Scoop.it

As part of the UCL Grand Challenge of Sustainable Cities, the London 2062 project is gathering evidence about the forces and factors that shape London, identifying decision points, and debating how the city will change over the five decades between London 2012 and London 2062. This process involves synthesising the diverse expertise within the academic community at UCL and elsewhere, together with London’s citizens, government, professions, artists, media and other public institutions.

Imagining the Future City: London 2062 (free download) is an edited collection based on the London 2062 project from UCL’s Grand Challenge of Sustainable Cities. The London 2062 project engaged academics, policy makers and practitioners, providing a forum for serious debate about the challenges and opportunities for London in the five decades following the Olympics.

The book is divided into four sections, considering London in terms of Things, Connections, Powerand Dreams. The book features contributions from leading academic thinkers at UCL and from those involved in shaping London on the ground, through policy and practice. The authors consider the future of London from multiple viewpoints, including transport, energy, smart infrastructure, water, population, housing and the economy.

The aim of this book, and the London 2062 programme, is to open discussion about the future of London. What is the future we want to see for London? Which priorities for a global city are in opposition? How can we meet carbon emission targets and deliver new infrastructure in the 21st Century?
