Learning with 'e's: 3 things you should know about digital literacies

Kaushilya Weerapura's insight:

Steve demonstrates the areas to focus in acquiring digital literacy – not as difficult as it seems.  I were to tell this to my mother, this is how I would bundle the three criteria:

1)     What is out there?

-       What is out there and what can you do with these different channels/mediums?

-       E.g. Consider YouTube, LinkedIn, Scoop It. Each of these mediums could be used to promote one’s professional practice and interests from different aspects)

2)     How to interpret the channel/medium?

-       Properties inherent and specific to the channel dictate how we interpret and interact with the presented content.

-       E.g. A video Vs. text

3)     How to express?

-       What is the best and effective means of presenting the content?

-       E.g. Reading out a piece of text with a flat tone on a video clip – not the best way to impress anyone.

When Virtue Becomes Vice

When Virtue Becomes Vice | Knowledge management & Learning | Scoop.it
The nature of a virtue is that a vice is almost always hidden inside.
Kaushilya Weerapura's insight:

If we are not conscious of the extent to which a context demands our virtues – virtues could become vices.

This article examines hidden vices of virtues by viewing our personality traits, which are admired and acknowledged as virtues, in dimensional continuums rather than binary statics. Thereby, posits each characteristic in a spectrum that holds the grain of its own destruction.

In a nutshell,

-       Excellence – or paralyzing perfectionism?

-       Fairness to everyone – or not fair to anyone?

-       Passion – or dominating obsession?

-       Agreeable – or lack of assertiveness?

-       Collaboration – or disbursed authority?

-       Balance – as superficial allotment of time?

Universities should educate – employers should train

Universities should educate – employers should train | Knowledge management & Learning | Scoop.it
The modern workplace places little emphasis on developing new staff’s skills, instead expecting universities to tailor curriculum
Kaushilya Weerapura's insight:

This is a very useful article which argues the role that should be played by the employersto effectively intgrate the university grads in to the workplace.

Universities have several initiatives to connect their students with the industry; for example, coop, Mitacs, etc.  However, I strongly believe there should be more cordination between the two entities.

In my opinion, universities and workplaces should work together on a program to identfy and bridge this "gap".

Tertiary education system not keeping pace with the demands of their own country is a phenomenon that stands true NOT only to Bangladesh but to most South Asian countries.

The other most important criterion is insufficient academic publications originating from this region. Due to getting rejected by North American academic journals, the opportunities of getting the knowledge originating from this region disseminated and tested has been unfairly limited.

5 Best Practices for Blended Learning

5 Best Practices for Blended Learning | Knowledge management & Learning | Scoop.it
Follow these five best practices for blended learning and take advantage of the flexibility of online courses while retaining the benefits of face-to-face classroom experience.

Via iPamba, michel verstrepen
Kaushilya Weerapura's insight:

Blended Learning (BL) is a way to engage learners through a mix of interfaces that addresses diverse learning preferences and styles.  This mix will help the learners to choose what works for them, while allowing the presenter to choose the medium that works best for the content.

Kristen demonstrates BL is not a collection of material compiled using a set of cool tools, rather for BL to work; it should be a “product” of a carefully planned process.  The 5 best practices is a good foundation for educators.

Thank you Kristen!

How To Measure The ROI of eLearning

How To Measure The ROI of eLearning | Knowledge management & Learning | Scoop.it
While there are some easy to measure hard-cost savings associated with eLearning (like less travel, fewer trainers, less work-interruption, etc.), the greatest benefit
Kaushilya Weerapura's insight:

When it comes to KM and learning, metrics has always been a "Hot topic".  This article gives an idea on how to establish critical success factors (CSF) to measure the success of eLearning initiatives thereby the ROI of learning initiatives of an organization.

I strongly believe CSF should be the foundation of deriving variables that could be used as KPIs (key performance indicators). Once the KPIs have been established based on the CSF, they could be used to ascertain the progressive success/failure of the new/old initiatives.

Another factor that is not emphasized by this article is - the time frames (blocking the periods, combining them, etc.). This factor is context specific (e.g. type of the object of measurement, business, etc.).
