The European Union has set itself aggressive goals to reduce GHG emissions by 20%, increase renewables share of energy generation to 20%, and to reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2020. The EU seems to be on track for the first two goals, but the third remains a challenge. In 2020, the European consumption of energy is projected to be 25 trillion kWh. By 2040 it is expected to rise to 28 trillion kWh. In terms of primary energy consumption, buildings represent around 40%. In 2009, residential buildings consumed 68% of the total final energy use in buildings. Energy in households is mainly consumed by heating (70%), cooling, hot water, cooking and appliances. Gas is the most common fuel used in buildings.

Kitasato University is one of Japan's top universities for life sciences and medical sciences, supported by undergraduate and graduate programs, research institutes, and affiliated hospitals. The university is currently building a new 14-story hospital on this campus, right next door to the existing Kitasato University Hospital. When completed, the new state-of-the-art hospital will replace much of the existing facility, which was built more than 40 years ago. The 92,700 square-meter facility will have 757 new beds and will feature a seismically isolated structure of reinforced concrete and steel-reinforced concrete construction. The building's lead designer, Nikken Sekkei Ltd., was selected in July 2009. The construction companies, led by Takenaka Corporation, were selected at the end of 2010. Construction began in September 2011 and is expected to be completed by the end of December 2013....

Building information modeling (BIM) has been marketed as the answer to the AEC industry's inadequate attempts to keep up with productivity gains from the use of technology that other industries have seen helping to improve efficiency, maintain a continuous thread from programmatic design to facilities management, and overall provide the profession a lifeline in retaining its leadership role in issues relating to the built environment......
"As I prepared for an upcoming presentation at a local University I unloaded my test iPad of all its applications and created a new iPad, complete only with apps which I use at school every week. This iPad would become my “essentials” iPad, strategically and efficiently full of apps I wholly recommend to every educator I meet. I went through the apps and I developed a list, indicating the apps purpose. I found that these purposes consistently fell into 3 categories: Consumption, Creation and Collaboration."

Collaborative learning can help to stimulate interesting debate and allow learners to discover a new perspective on material. Many educators are now turning to collaborative learning strategies to help their students to learn.
Users’ engagement is of the essence to get the most of collaborative platforms. Despite the many promises of collaborative work in the fields of innovation, management and general organisation, it seems that the use of appropriate tools is still difficult to implement. In the article I curate today, the author sees 4 clear principles that should be applied whenever implementing such platforms:
So here are 5 simple things that you could do to have a more collaborative workplace: 1. File sharing and collaboration – STOP using email for file sharing and collaborative work on content immediately!
When it comes to the future of work and collaboration I've worked with and researched hundreds of companies. Collaboration is indeed a top priority for many business leaders but knowing what makes organizations successful can be a tricky thing.
Last week there was a big new update to BIM 360 Glue, Joan Allen, Senior Product Manager for BIM 360 Glue talks to us about it in more detail. One of the many advantages of using cloud-based products and services is the immediate, automatic access to product updates. The Autodesk BIM 360 product team thrives on providing regular, timely updates, often based on direct feedbackfrom customers. The latest BIM 360 Glue update - designed and developed in response to customer feedback - provides powerful new clash resolution capabilities, so that you and your team can more efficiently and effectively manage the collaborative project coordination process.

Building information modeling allows architects, builders, engineers and developers to gain better control over their projects, and is set to become the standard operating procedure for construction projects of varying scales and complexities. AEC industry is abuzz with the high value BIM provides. This is why construction firms are increasingly investing in outsourcing BIM services to streamline their projects and document each and every process in detail right from the conceptualization, design and fabrication to facility management, renovation and demolition stages...

A group at Arup has come up with an imaginative and ambitious way to get architects and engineers fired up about BIM. It is using everyday BIM technology to model the human body and show what can be achieved with the software available. The designers driving Project OVE, as the demonstration project is called, came up with the idea to present at a major conference run by Autodesk. “The idea is the building is in the form of a human body and then the services represent the body’s organs and functions,” explains Arup associate Casey Rutland.

Point cloud is a set of data points within a coordinate system. The points defined by x, y and z coordinates in 3D space, represent the outer surface of an object. These points are plotted using a 3D scanning process.
The Point Cloud Data collected via 3D laser scanning technique can be imported in Revit and used for BIM.
Some hi-end scanners collect photo-metric images along with Point Cloud Data for a building. These photographs play an important role in review and identification of building components....
One of the uses of BIM, and increasingly a deliverable, is that what is on drawings matches what is in schedules. In theory it seems simple. If your BIM software is a database you just extract the data. But just because it is possible doesn't necessarily mean it is practical. Can the people who provide the content and manage schedules do it themselves or do they require specialize computer skills (or assistance from some-one with those skills) to do it? Do I fire the person who knows the difference between a passage and a privacy mortice latch, and replace them with some-one who knows the difference between a type and instance parameter?
Schedule creation and management is poorly supported in BIM authoring softwares. It is as if they are an afterthought, something to assist drawing creation, rather than important documents in themselves....
