Mediterranean Diet Associated with Longevity

Mediterranean Diet Associated with Longevity | KNOWING............. | Scoop.it
The findings published in the British Medical Journal included data from 4,676 women from the Nurses’ Health Study — an ongoing study running since 1976 that has been following over 120,000 nurses from the United States. The participants filled out food frequency questionnaires periodically (about every 4 years), and had blood tests for measurement of telomere length. The Alternate Mediterranean Diet Score was used to assess adherence to the diet.

The results showed that greater adherence to a Mediterranean diet — characterized by high intake of vegetables, olive oil, fruit, legumes and less red meat and saturated fats — was significantly associated with longer telomere length.

The researchers noted that oxidative stress can accelerate telomere weakening and the established effect of the Mediterranean diet on oxidative stress may explain its effect on telomere length.

The researchers concluded that the results further support the benefits of adherence to the Mediterranean diet for promoting health and longevity.

Plan won't save Great Barrier Reef: Australian scientists

Plan won't save Great Barrier Reef: Australian scientists | KNOWING............. | Scoop.it
Australia's plans to protect the Great Barrier Reef are inadequate, short-sighted and will not prevent its decline, the country's pre-eminent grouping of natural scientists said Tuesday. The draft plan, released for consultation last month, was supposed to allay concerns by the United Nations about the reef's health after UNESCO threatened to put it on the World Heritage "in danger" list. Environment Minister Greg Hunt has said the proposal reflects an effort to balance the priorities of protecting the reef, which is teeming with marine life, and long-term sustainable development. "The plan also seems overly focused on the short-term task of addressing UNESCO's concerns about the reef's World Heritage Listing, rather than the longer-term challenges of restoring the values of the reef." Hughes said while the plan identified targets for reducing harmful agricultural run-off, any improvements would likely be lost in the unprecedented amount of dredging for coal ports and the Queensland state government's plans to double agricultural production by 2040.

Diver accidentally discovers world's oldest gold coin

Diver accidentally discovers world's oldest gold coin | KNOWING............. | Scoop.it
A diver in Bulgaria discovered what is thought to be the world's oldest gold coin — and the find was apparently accidental.
The scuba diver saw the coin near Sozopol on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, Bulgaria's BTA news agency reported, and gave it to Bozhidar Dimitrov, the head of the National History Museum in Sofia.
The museum found that the coin appears to have been minted in western Anatolia in the second half of the seventh century B.C.E., making it more than 2,750 years old. The coin is thought to be from Lydia, a land in Anatolia that's believed to be the originator of gold and silver coins.
Vladimir Penchev, a numismatist at the National History Museum, told BTA that the coin is made of electrum, an alloy of gold and silver used in early coins. He noted that the coin is "the first of its kind" to be found in Bulgaria, The Sofia Globe reports. --Meghan DeMaria

Sara Statham can cross an item off her bucket list: scuba diving in the Arctic Ocean.

Her first dive off the coast to Iqaluit, Nunavut, was captured on a GoPro.

"It was amazing to go scuba diving in Frobisher Bay, especially because Iqalummiut (people who live in Iqaluit) usually spend their time on top of the water (as sea ice) — not below it," Statham wrote in an email to Yahoo Canada.

"The highlight of my experience was definitely seeing all the underwater sea life. The species were so beautiful, peculiar, and unexpected. I think that a big misconception about the Arctic is that it is barren, because it definitely is not."
