Docutopia: Eight New Year’s Wishes for Documentary Film | SUNDANCE NOW | KNOWING............. | Scoop.it

The last year was a very good one for documentary films. By many accounts, 2013 showed how docs have gotten better and more popular, gaining greater legitimacy in the culture at large, and sparking both discussion and political action. But like any art form or industry—or person for that matter—there’s always room for improvement. Docutopia is always striving to make the doc world better, by highlighting what’s good, criticizing what’s bad, and generally drawing more attention to the form.

Urban Nature: How to Foster Biodiversity in World’s Cities - A New Urban Wildlife Movement? | KNOWING............. | Scoop.it

- ▶ URBAN NATURE: HOW TO FOSTER BIODIVERSITY IN WORLD'S CITIES

As the world becomes more urbanized, researchers and city managers from Baltimore to Britain are recognizing the importance of providing urban habitat that can support biodiversity. The Green Leap: Can We Construct Urban Communities That Conserve Biodiversity?

Huffington Post Green, March 3, 2013

- ▶ THE GREEN LEAP:  CAN WE CONSTRUCT URBAN COMMUNITIES THAT CONSERVE BIODIVERSITY?

Why are green developments different? The goals are conservation while providing a unique living experience. Biodiversity, however, often is lower on the totem pole of priorities.

For the first time in our history, more people live in urban vs. rural areas and humans continue to move into cities. Cities have huge impacts on our natural resources. Urban dwellers consume vast amounts of energy, produce waste, and alter landscapes to the point where native plant and animal populations decline precipitously. As cities grow, people have pondered -- can we develop land without destroying our natural heritage?.. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mark-hostetler/the-green-leap-can-we-con_b_1314981.html

Why 2013 Was a Banner Year For Documentaries, And 2014 Looks Even Better

Why 2013 Was a Banner Year For Documentaries, And 2014 Looks Even Better | KNOWING............. | Scoop.it

"A banner year for documentary" is what you’re likely to have read in more than a few year-end overviews in recent weeks, and not without reason: 2013 was a great year for documentaries, though also one that drew attention to the ways in which our (mis)use of that word tends to shape and shift our expectations. “Documentary,” after all, is a formalist construction, a lens that can clarify as much as contort the manner in which we view a work and its responsibility to its subject and its viewers.

This thought sums up nicely what documentaries have been exploring over the past few years and moving forward:

"Aesthetically and ideologically, the line between fiction and documentary has never been blurred quite so often, and quite so effectively."

Belize -  Twenty years ago, when Francis Ford Coppola opened Blancaneaux Lodge in western Belize, relatively few travelers had ventured into this small Central American country. Slowly they arrived, many of them curious to witness the scenery that had captivated the film director, which he described in an email as “completely remote, with a beautiful pristine river you could drink the water out of and the most star-studded night sky I had ever seen.” Since then, upscale rustic hotels have cropped up all over Belize..."

Giant industrial filters trap droplets of dangerous chemicals at the surface, all in the hope of making the water drinkable again and protecting the workers of tech giants such as Google and Symantec from toxic vapors. Often the original mess is almost untreatable. In Silicon Valley’s case, it would take 700 years of continuous treatment to make the groundwater drinkable. http://www.theguardian.com/environment/ng-interactive/2014/mar/-sp-toxic-waste-silicon-valley-trail

Truth Stirring: Predestination

Truth Stirring: Predestination | KNOWING............. | Scoop.it

#1 Today ~ God wants everyone to be saved and know the truth of His gospel BUT we must remember that God is loving and He doesn’t make us puppets on a string that can only go where He wants and do only what He wishes, He gives us the free will to live our lives as we see fit. Thus, we than have man making his own choices for his life, his relationship with God, and his destination!

Paul Spencer's curator insight, October 12, 2013 1:56 PM

Predestination is a serious topic of division among Christians within and between different denominations.  In my own life, I have wrestled with the idea of predestination as opposed to free will.  While there are excellent arguments on both sides, this one in particular acts as a perfect example of a limited perspective.

Martin Pierce's curator insight, October 25, 2013 9:03 PM

We are free to do as we wish, but God will inevitably draw His chldren to Himself. This means that free will and predestination are both true..

He also noted that Greece with its temperate climate is a country which can be visited in all seasons, with October 2013 arrivals up by 22%. Furthermore, from May to August 2013 the number of Canadian arrivals at “Eleftherios Venizelos“ International Airport north of Athens rose by 45%.

The extensive three page article was accompanied by photographs showing particularly attractive parts of Greece. Furthermore, it presents an overview of the Greek capital and cultural heritage of the country by focusing on key locations, as well as highlighting the diversity of the islands and mainland.

Farming for A Living Landscape

Farming for A Living Landscape | KNOWING............. | Scoop.it

The Wildlife Trusts

Farmers and landowners can play a leading role in achieving A Living Landscape by managing their land to protect and enhance wildlife.

Across the UK, The Wildlife Trusts are working closely with farmers and landowners to secure nature’s recovery. A healthy natural environment underpins sustainable farming systems, and likewise farming and land management are critical to creating A Living Landscape, where farmland is producing food but also bursting with wildlife.... http://www.wildlifetrusts.org/living-landscape/campaigns/cap-reform/farming-living-landscape

BUT FARMLAND WILDLIFE IS IN TROUBLE:

-    Many species are dependent on farmland, particularly birds like the tree sparrow, corn bunting, skylark and yellowhammer, but populations of farmland birds have fallen by 48% since 1970.

-    Bumblebees, butterflies and mammals like the brown hare have also seen major declines.

-    We have lost 97% of our wildflower grasslands due to intensification or conversion to arable land.More than 100,000 km of hedgerows were destroyed between 1984 and 1990.

..............""""""""""...................

......

For example:

Creating new wetlands in the farmed landscape can reduce nutrient runoff into rivers and streams, so protecting drinking water supplies and also providing valuable wildlife habitat.

Hedgerows provide shelter for livestock, protect soils from wind erosion, provide ‘wild food’, provide shelter and nesting habitats for birds, small mammals and insects and act as highways that link bat roosting sites to their feeding areas.

Flower-rich grassy margins along arable fields provide habitats for bees and other crop pollinators, as well as ladybirds and other predatory species which play an important role in controlling crop pests and can reduce the need for pesticides.

Sustainably managed farmland can provide a vital link between protected wildlife sites, helping species to move freely through the landscape and forming a giant patchwork of natural spaces.

Kayak with icebergs in Newfoundland

In Twillingate, icebergs are treated like visiting house guests. Locals discuss their habits and behaviours and how long they may or may not stick around. Watching 10,000-year-old ice smash into the coastline is impressive on land, and even more so from the water. Considering that 90 per cent of an iceberg is underwater, you'll want to keep your distance as you paddle around bergs that can reach 15 storeys. Veteran kayakers will remind you to always watch where you're going and stay well clear of floating 'bergy bits' — they're as tough as concrete.
