Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

I'm skeptical; I still believe that gender inequality (rampant in the medical sciences as well as the family dynamic where fathers are more involved in their boys lives and are more likely to get them help than their daughters) has more to do with more males being diagnosed. But here's a study that's worthy of noting.

Diana Petschauer's curator insight, July 26, 2013 3:39 PM

This is one of the most comprehensive apps I have ever used for students/ individuals with autism or any individual needing AAC or  life skills features that are built right into the app! Visual schedules and timers, customizable interactive scenes that are literally the rooms/ places that the student/ individual will be in daily, video modeling and sequencing, and communication; it's absolutely phenomenal! The Lite version is FREE and starts with an excellent step by step tutorial and allows you to experience much of what the app has to offer before deciding to purchase the full version. Well worth the price for students/ individuals who will benefit as it replaces so many other apps and having to use multiple apps.

Elizabeth Ralston's comment, July 27, 2013 2:07 PM
I'm going to look into this. I need a customizable app for higher level students.

Wait how does Autism Speaks hurt Autistic people?

Wait how does Autism Speaks hurt Autistic people? | Kinsanity | Scoop.it

Autism Speaks is an organization that talks over autistic people. They don’t have any autistic employees or head members. They are not concerned with the psychophysical wellbeing of autistic people, rather they are more concerned with autistic people’s allistic/neurotypical relatives’ wellbeing, often at the expense of autistic people’s.

Most of the money Autism Speaks receives through donations goes towards “autism research”, whose primary objective is to find the “cause” of autism in order to do some eugenics magic and eradicate us all in the long run.

Autism Speaks actively spreads misinformation about autism. They say that vaccines cause autism, although no compounds in vaccines are able to change brain structure in such a way. They also organize many “autism walks” and similar events to further fuel their agenda and attract more donators.

They have produced a number of promotional videos/interviews, including one where an allistic mother discusses her thoughts of committing a homicide-suicide of her autistic child, right in front of said child...

Autism link to violence is a myth

Autism link to violence is a myth | Kinsanity | Scoop.it

The truth is, people with autism are far more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators. Even in our supposedly enlightened society, anyone who is different can become a magnet for bullies and predators. Growing up with undiagnosed Asperger's, I learned that the hard way. So did my son, Jack (I call him Cubby), who also has Asperger's. I'd sensed that all my life, but it's also supported by scientific studies, in both medical and criminal justice research.
