Has Apple Missed the Social-Music Train? - BusinessWeek | Kill The Record Industry | Scoop.it

"According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the music service that Google is close to launching will include sharing features via integration with its Google+ platform, which isn’t that surprising, since Google has said the new social network will be part of everything it does. For Apple, however, the new social features in Google’s offering will reinforce what Spotify and other music services have already made obvious: Apple and iTunes are falling behind in the social-music race, which could have significant consequences for the company as the music industry continues to evolve."

Interview with Bjork: “The industry was making too much money; now it’s gone normal again” | Kill The Record Industry | Scoop.it

"I don’t think it is better or worse. I started as a 14 year old hanging out with folks from Iceland’s only indie label (Gramm), where it was all about self-sufficiency, and not signing to big labels because they killed Elvis and will rip you off. I think for a lot of years there was a lot of unnecessary overhead in record companies; they were kind of making too much money and now it has gone normal again. However, at the end of the day, there will always be people who want to listen to music and always be people who want to make it and that’s what it is all about."

Lessons from the Industry Formerly Known as "The Record Business" - James Barton and Brian Message - Harvard Business Review

Lessons from the Industry Formerly Known as "The Record Business" - James Barton and Brian Message - Harvard Business Review | Kill The Record Industry | Scoop.it

"A record company's value used to be measured by the acquisition, protection, and exploitation of copyrights. Exploiting those copyrights by selling songs is an easy business model to understand and used to be the foundation of a very healthy global industry. Historically, the record business was the heart of the music industry. Sell a lot of records and you were a successful business. And artists also succeeded through record sales: they became household names when they had sold a lot of records."

"For all the problems at SoundExchange (huge unpaid balances, the departure of Sirius XM, etc.), at least they're contributing to an industry growth story. According to stats just published by Music & Copyright, performance royalties grew 9.1 percent in 2010, to $1.6 billion on a global basis. "The Fair Trade Music campaign is a group of Portland musicians organized by the Portland Musicians Union to establish a fair and livable standard of pay for local musicians. Music is a critical part of Portland's international reputation as a vibrant center for arts and culture, a magnet for the creative community, and therefore a desirable place to live and work. Yet most professional musicians in Portland struggle to earn a living at their craft, most lack health insurance, and many have to work second or third jobs to pay the bills."
