SoundCloud, the Berlin-based audio streaming site, is getting worried about copyright violations on its site.

SoundCloud is like YouTube for audio; it allows anybody to upload any kind of audio. This naturally opens the door to people uploading copyrighted audio. Just as YouTube has had to do, SoundCloud now wants to work out agreements with copyright holders over what to do when this happens

 

Pierre Priot's insight:

Smart move from SoundCloud. Let the majors in so they won't sue their own endeavor.

That's sad news for the indie world though.

The Universal Music Group suffered a decline in earnings in the first half of 2013 due to costs related to its acquisition of EMI Recorded Music and the subsequent restructuring to produce synergistic cost savings. But its topline enjoyed a nice increase in sales so far this year, thanks to revenues generated by the EMI catalog.

Universal Music Group has even had it's tolls taken from consumers not buying music, but EMI has been able to assist in making their decline in sales not too low. Many of their album sales are relied upon very big and famous artist's such as Taylor Swift or Rihanna.
