SoundCloud to record labels: Don't sue us and we'll cut you in

SoundCloud to record labels: Don't sue us and we'll cut you in | Kill The Record Industry | Scoop.it

SoundCloud, the Berlin-based audio streaming site, is getting worried about copyright violations on its site.

SoundCloud is like YouTube for audio; it allows anybody to upload any kind of audio. This naturally opens the door to people uploading copyrighted audio. Just as YouTube has had to do, SoundCloud now wants to work out agreements with copyright holders over what to do when this happens

Pierre Priot's insight:

Smart move from SoundCloud. Let the majors in so they won't sue their own endeavor.

That's sad news for the indie world though.

You Still Can’t Resell Your iTunes Songs, Court Rules | Kill The Record Industry | Scoop.it
Resell a CD? Sure. MP3? Nope.

In the U.S. it’s perfectly legal to buy a CD or DVD and then sell it to someone else — that’s the reason Netflix exists.

But when it comes to digital media, that doesn’t work. That’s the gist of a new Federal court ruling, which says that startup ReDigi can’t do what it says it can do — let users resell songs they bought on iTunes.

Pierre Priot's insight:

So you can't resell a digital file, U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan says.
