On Tuesday, Neil Young is set to unveil his long-gestating high-quality digital music player Pono at SXSW. But before he introduces it to the public, details have been announced. The device, called PonoPlayer, will reportedly cost $399 and come with 128GB of memory. They'll start taking discounted pre-orders on March 15 via Kickstarter.

I don't see this killing any iPods....it's a bulky and awkward device that people will have to purchase in addition to their phone/ipod/iPad. Not likely to start a revolution, even if one is needed.

With more labels on board and the archives being reconverted, I think this will set a new standard for codecs, conversions, and audio. I may not need my vinyl anymore.

We’ve heard rumors that Apple would start selling high-resolution music — as in “better than CD quality” — for years, but so far, “lossless” has been as good as it gets, and the only way to get it in iTunes is to rip your own CDs. Evolver.fm has received word from legendary sound engineer Tony Faulkner that Apple is accepting high-resolution music files for iTunes, even if it is not selling them (yet?).

compressing audio only files messes with the quality but in order to send audio iles it has to be in a small enough file.
