Russ Roberts's insight:

Expect a lot of experiments from amateur radio operators in this narrow band just below the standard broadcast band.  Antennas will be a major challenge.  Some hams have done remarkably well, considering the power and antenna restrictions of this band. Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Russ Roberts's insight:

The problem described in this forum is fairly common among new operators.  Perhaps, this frustrated ham could contact his/her mentor (or "elmer" in ham parlance) and arrange for a simple one on one conversation over the air.  Once that is done, a small measure of confidence will be gained.  Then, join a local 2 meter net, where things are a bit more relaxed than a formal traffic net.  Get to know some local radio club members and ask for their help.  All of us were at this point sometime during our "career" as amateur radio operators.  Good luck.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

US House bill calls for wireless mic safe havens | Broadcast Engineering

US House bill calls for wireless mic safe havens | Broadcast Engineering | KH6JRM's Amateur Radio Blog | Scoop.it

A bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on Aug. 1 would require the Federal Communications Commission to take steps to ensure wireless mic operations would remain protected from harmful interference from new, unlicensed TV band white space devices.

The Wireless Microphone Users Interference Protection Act of 2013 (H.R. 2911), introduced by Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL), would require the FCC to expand eligibility for Part 74 licenses to certain wireless mic users and set up two safe haven channels for wireless mic usage. The bill also would require the regulatory agency to give owners and operators of wireless mics access to TV band databases to protect wireless mic operation from interference.

The bill has garnered support from the broadcast industry, wireless mic manufacturers and the Broadway theatrical community.

In a letter supporting the congressman’s effort to protect wireless mic operation from interference, Gordon Smith, president and CEO of NAB, called the microphones “a vital component” in how local television stations serve their communities.

“Without safe haven protections for these operations, broadcasters may not be able to provide on-the-scene coverage of breaking news, emergency information, political events and other time-sensitive situations,” the letter said.

Russ Roberts's insight:

The battle for spectrum space is underway.  The Part 74 issue is just the beginning of a struggle to share available rf spectrum.  Serious inroads on UHF frequencies shared by Amateur Radio are already moving forward.  Use it or lose it.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

First computer made of tiny carbon nanotubes is unveiled

First computer made of tiny carbon nanotubes is unveiled | KH6JRM's Amateur Radio Blog | Scoop.it

The miniaturization of electronic devices has been the principal driving force behind the semiconductor industry, and has brought about major improvements in computational power and energy efficiency. Although advances with silicon-based electronics continue to be made, alternative technologies are being explored. Digital circuits based on transistors fabricated from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have the potential to outperform silicon by improving the energy–delay product, a metric of energy efficiency, by more than an order of magnitude. Hence, CNTs are an exciting complement to existing semiconductor technologies.

Owing to substantial fundamental imperfections inherent in CNTs, however, only very basic circuit blocks have been demonstrated. Scientists from Stanford recently show how these imperfections can be overcome, and demonstrate the first computer built entirely using CNT-based transistors. The CNT computer runs an operating system that is capable of multitasking: as a demonstration, we perform counting and integer-sorting simultaneously. In addition, we implement 20 different instructions from the commercial MIPS instruction set to demonstrate the generality of our CNT computer. This experimental demonstration is the most complex carbon-based electronic system yet realized. It is a considerable advance because CNTs are prominent among a variety of emerging technologies that are being considered for the next generation of highly energy-efficient electronic systems.

Another computer revolution may be upon us. Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Musk: SpaceX Has All the Pieces For Reusable Rockets

Musk: SpaceX Has All the Pieces For Reusable Rockets | KH6JRM's Amateur Radio Blog | Scoop.it

On Sunday, SpaceX leapt toward its dream of affordable orbital flight through reusable launch vehicles. The company's Falcon 9 v1.1 rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base on the California coast carrying the Canadian CASSIOPE scientific satellite, as well as a trio of small, university-built satellites. But the big success for Elon Musk's space venture came when some of the rockets succeeded in refiring their engines, a major step toward a reusable Falcon 9.
