Ham radio operators helped with Jemez search.
Russ Roberts's insight:

Excellent article from the "Rio Rancho Observer" on the role amateur radio operators played in the search for a missing firefighter.  Amateur radio operators provided communications in an area with little or no cell phone coverage.  Another example of the versatility and community service provided by "hams".  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

“Part of what you have to understand is what frequencies you can use, what type of radio and antenna systems, so that you can bounce your signal around the world,” said club President Ken Pokigo.
Russ Roberts's insight:

An excellent article promoting Amateur Radio from "The Sun" reporter Alicia Greco.  Greco weaves her narrative about the mission and history of Amateur Radio around the activities of the South Towns Amateur Radio Society (STARS) in Hamburg, New York.  Greco interviews key members of the club, who explain the attraction of amateur radio in terms of community service and the opportunity for life-long learning.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Russ Roberts's insight:

Despite some comments about the "antiquated communications systems" used by amateur radio operators, this "Wall Street Journal" article about the World Radiosport Championship and the veterans participating in the international contest is well-written and does a pretty good job of explaining how knowledge of the "electromagnetic spectrum" enables hams to communicate with fellow operators across the globe.  The tone of the article is positive and brings a human touch to the event.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

All clear for Sunday’s Antares launch | NewSpace Journal | KH6JRM's Amateur Radio Blog | Scoop.it

NASA and Orbital Sciences said Saturday they believe that weather and technical issues are behind them and will be ready to launch a Cygnus cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station on Sunday.

Mission managers gave approval Saturday afternoon for the launch at 12:52 pm EDT (1652 GMT) Sunday of an Antares rocket on the Orb-2 commercial cargo mission to the station. That launch has been pushed back for two days after weather delayed launch preparations this week at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) at Wallops Island, Virginia.

Russ Roberts's insight:

An interesting and enlightening story of amateur radio operator Chris Howard who has a new concept for radio--"Classic Book Radio"--programming consisting of the reading of public domain literature over the airwaves.  Chris already has a FCC license for a low-power FM station at 95.5 MHz.  All he lacks is money to buy the necessary equipment to get on the air.  As a former broadcaster, I can appreciate the challenge of getting a station on the air.  You need money and lots of time.  Contrary to what Chris envisions, he won't be able to do the project alone.   None the less, I salute him for trying to add some quality programming to the broadcasting mix.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).
