Now that system is available as a practically turn-key receive system that eliminates component-matching guesswork for Amateur Radio enthusiasts.
Russ Roberts's insight:

One of the reasons the FT5ZM Amsterdam Island DXpedition was so successful in its brief time on the air was the use of a special receiving antenna system designed by DX Engineering.  Now, this antenna system is being offered to the serious DX chaser who wants the ultimate DX receiving antenna. According to DX Engineering its FT5ZM package, complete with 1,000 feet of high quality coaxial cable, four active vertical antennas, an active relay unit, a control console, a sequencer, and compression connectors.  For details on this superb receiving antenna system, visit http://www.DXEngineering.com.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Russ Roberts's insight:

According to Australian amateur radio operator Dave Nebe (VK4HAX) the recently completed "PR4 Amateur Radio Expo" accomplished its main goals of "community interaction and media coverage" for Amateur Radio.  In addition to the interest generated by exhibits, workshops, and guest speakers, a timely interview with Dave by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation helped send the message that amateur radio is alive and well "down under."  Thanks to the hard work by our amateur radio friends in Australia, amateur radio sent out a positive message that may encourage others to become licensed hams and to better serve their communities.  Amateur Radio clubs in the United States should follow Australia's example, especially now that "Field Day" is coming in June.  Why not arrange for an interview with a local radio or television station?  Or perhaps, one of your club members could write an article about Field Day for your local newspaper.  If you do this, your club can earn 100 extra points on your Field Day log submission.  This would be a win-win for your club and the media outlet.  You get publicity, while the radio/television gets credit for public service and community programming.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Students at the Bolton School in the UK will be using amateur radio equipment to track the flight path of their soon- to- be launched high altitude balloon.  Under the direction of Alec Jones and Chris Walker (G0VUX), students designed and built the balloon package.  Students also wrote the software for the onboard computer.  Many schools that started using high altitude balloon ended up designing microsats for low earth orbits (LEO).  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Think of this project as "spring cleaning" with a radio touch.  On 08 March 2014, forty high school and univesity students from the Cincinnati, Ohio area helped clean the VOA Museum of Broadcasting during its annual "Work Day."  VOA Museum Executive Director Jack Dominic said, "We had a huge turnout of voluntees and muscle power."  Dominic added that the museum needs volunteers for data entry, its docent training program, archiving historical materials, and light maintenance duties.  For more information, visit http://www.voamuseum.org.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Here's my "take" on Ofcom's realignment of amateur radio frequencies in the 2.3 GHz and 3.4 GHz bands.  Ofcom, and to a lesser extent our own FCC, has been under pressure to allocate more rf spectrum for broadband services, such as the internet, 4G cell phone service, and radio monitoring services.  It may be only a matter of time before the FCC relents and removes amateur radio from those bands, too.  This article was first published on my amateur radio antenna blog--http://kh6jrm.blogspot.com.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).
