How many American politicians were Amateur Radio Operators? It should be a requirement! #KJ6LNG #73 http://t.co/MxtMFwMwmj
Russ Roberts's insight:

Interesting comments to this tweet from John C. Dvorak.  Pictured above is one of amateur radio's major "personalities'--the late Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater.  Other famous rules who were hams include the former king of Spain and the late King Hussein (JY1) of Jordan.  You never know who'll you meet when you answer that "CQ".  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

SSTV at Ham Radio Field Day - YouTube

I dragged out a bunch of radios, computer, iPhone and iPad to demonstrate ham radio slow scan television (SSTV) at field day.
Russ Roberts's insight:

Nice, short video (5:19) from K7AGE about his use of SSTV on Field Day.  SSTV remains an intriguing and fairly simple mode that doesn't require a lot of expensive equipment.  Give SSTV a try...you may like it.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Why not create an organization of amateur radio operators who relayed each other's messages, increasing the reach of the fledging technology?
Russ Roberts's insight:

A timely feature from "The Hartford Courant" about the role that Hartford businessman and ham radio enthusiast Hiram Percy Maxim played in the founding of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). The ARRL is observing its centennial year in 2014.  The article has contains a basic outline of the mission and purpose of the Amateur Radio Service and how hams help their communities.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Russ Roberts's insight:

Amateur radio operators aren't the only ones suffering from tower location problems. Check out this article about public opposition to a 135-foot cell phone tower leased to AT &T.  All of the usual "not in my backyard" excuses are given.  One of the upset residents of Milford, Connecticut said he didn't care about cell phone coverage in his neighborhood.  Typical "head in the sand" attitude.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Russ Roberts's insight:

This weekend (12-13 July 2014) will be a busy time for amateur radio operators.  Ham operators will have their hands full with the World Radiosport Team Championship in New England and the International Amateur Radio Union's (IARU) HF contest.  I don't think I'll get much sleep this weekend. I'll just fire up the old Argosy II and see what happens.  It's anothe caffeine weekend (Kona Coffee, of course, since I live in Hawaii.).  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

FCC fines couple $15,000 for operating an unlicensed radio station

Russ Roberts's insight:

Thanks to reporter David Hall for this strange tale from Austin, Texas.  According to "the Austin Chronicle", has fined Walter and Rae Olenick $15,000 for operating an unlicensed radio station--"Liberty 90.1 FM."  The Olenicks claim the FCC have no jurisdiction in Texas and that United States laws don't apply to them.  In a similar case, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the FCC had the authority to issue a Forfeiture Order.  It takes all kinds of people to make life interesting and frustrating for those of us who follow the law.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Russ Roberts's insight:

Days before the scheduled 2014 ARRL Field Day, amateur radio operators from the Ukiah, California area participated in an emergency communications exercise conducted by the Mendocino County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) on 26 June 2014. Thirty-five hams volunteered their expertise to man health care facilities, including area hospitals, during the simulated emergency exercise.  Public safety agencies participating in the exercise told the "Ukiah Daily Journal" that "HAM" Radio is a vital emergency tool in times of disaster if other methods of communication are not available."  Nice, positive article about amateur radio and the types of service it can give to local communities.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Russ Roberts's insight:

An interesting and enlightening story of amateur radio operator Chris Howard who has a new concept for radio--"Classic Book Radio"--programming consisting of the reading of public domain literature over the airwaves.  Chris already has a FCC license for a low-power FM station at 95.5 MHz.  All he lacks is money to buy the necessary equipment to get on the air.  As a former broadcaster, I can appreciate the challenge of getting a station on the air.  You need money and lots of time.  Contrary to what Chris envisions, he won't be able to do the project alone.   None the less, I salute him for trying to add some quality programming to the broadcasting mix.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Exceptionally well-written article from "starlocalmedia.com.", focusing on last week's (28-29 June 2014) Field Day activities of The McKinney Amateur Radio Club.  Club spokesman, 18-year-old Mike Baker, said amateur radio is more than a hobby, because "we provide service to the city, state, and country."  Because of the relative inexperience of many younger members of the club, this Field Day centered on training and basic communications procedures.  The McKinney Amateur Radio Club had fun, but knew, deep inside, that what members were enjoying on a beautiful weekend could be used to save lives in the event of a disaster.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Enjoyable post from Andrew Garratt (M6GTG).  It's not every day a famous poet (Robert Burns) has verse applicable to amateur radio. Andrew takes a few artistic liberties with Mr. Burns in describing how he finally was able to support his homebrew Moxon antenna...a plan that finally got the approval of his housing manager.  Sounds, familiar to those of us plagued by CC&Rs and HOAs.  In the end, creativity and determination win the day.  Good photographs and a well-written text are the highlights of this article.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).

Russ Roberts's insight:

Nice note from Bob Witte (K0NR) about the upcoming "Colorado 14er Event" on 03 August 2014.  The event is part of the larger Summits on The Air (SOTA) Program, "opening up over 1m700 summits in Colorado for ham radio activity."  The "14er" will focus on the 54 peaks in Colorado with elevations of 14,000 feet or more.  Bob advises climbers to train well, adhere to accepted safety standards, and provide backup communications.  For hams operating the event at home, you can contact the climbers on 2 meter FM, beginning with 147.42 MHz simplex.  The article provides a link to other FM and HF frequencies that will be used that day.  Good Luck!  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).
