An Overview of E-Portfolios | EDUCAUSE.edu

An Overview of E-Portfolios | EDUCAUSE.edu | kgitch on eLearning | Scoop.it

E-portfolios are a valuable learning and assessment tool. An e-portfolio is a digitized collection of artifacts including demonstrations, resources, and accomplishments that represent an individual, group, or institution. This collection can be comprised of text-based, graphic, or multimedia elements archived on a Web site or on other electronic media such as a CD-ROM or DVD. An e-portfolio is more than a simple collection—it can also serve as an administrative tool to manage and organize work created with different applications and to control who can see the work. E-portfolios encourage personal reflection and often involve the exchange of ideas and feedback.
Three types of e-portfolios are described in this report: student e-portfolios, teaching e-portfolios, and institutional e-portfolios. E-portfolios can support student advisement, career preparation, and credential documentation; the sharing of teaching philosophies and practices; department and program self-studies; and institutional and program accreditation processes. This report defines and categorizes e-portfolios, offers examples of higher education e-portfolio implementations, reviews e-portfolio technology, and addresses adoption issues.

Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, February 22, 2013 8:22 AM

Change is not easy. If you are considering transforming to personalized learning environments, you may have concerns about the changes you have to do to make this work for you and your learners. If you are a coach or professional developer, you are working with teachers guiding them through the changes they need to do to personalize learning. This chart can help you determine what type of strategies to use to guide change about the following seven stages:

> Awareness:  do not know about or sure what Personalized Learning is
> Informational: tell me more about Personalized Learning
> Personal: concerned how Personalized Learning will impact them as a teacher
> Management: concerned about managing the classroom when learning is personalized
> Consequence: wants to know how Personalized Learning will impact teaching and learning
> Collaborative: looking forward to share with and learn from other teachers
> Refocusing: nterested to support teachers and lead the way to personalize learning

Too often our students consider their work in the classroom as required assignments—not work that has anything to do with what they will be doing in the real world.

Applying the Seven Principles for Good Practice to the Online Classroom | Faculty Focus

Applying the Seven Principles for Good Practice to the Online Classroom | Faculty Focus | kgitch on eLearning | Scoop.it

Almost 25 years have passed since Chickering and Gamson offered seven principles for good instructional practices in undergraduate education. While the state of undergraduate education has evolved to some degree over that time, I think the seven principles still have a place in today’s collegiate classroom. Originally written to communicate best practices for face-to-face instruction, the principles translate well to the online classroom and can help to provide guidance for those of us designing courses to be taught online.
