It is heartwarming to see students expanding their worldview and learning about other cultures.  Here at SASOL Foundation we link Dutch tertiary students with Kenyan tertiary student around shared fields of study.  When they return home their worldviews are also enlarged and they are often more mature as a result. -tjhb

USDA ERS - International Food Security Assessment, 2013-2023

USDA ERS - International Food Security Assessment, 2013-2023 | Kenya Food and Water Security | Scoop.it

By 2023, however, the number of food-insecure people is projected to increase nearly 23 percent to 868 million, with the share of the population that is food insecure growing from 20.4 percent to 21.5 percent.

SASOL Foundation's insight:

SASOL Foundation and other non-government organizations are working hard to ensure that our part of Kenya will be secure in the areas of water and food.

Through community mobilization, training, building sand dams, and the promotion of dryland farming techniques, it is possible.  -tjhb

It would be interesting if the Kenya government could consider implementing a food security early warning system like Dominca.

The town farmers built

The town farmers built | Kenya Food and Water Security | Scoop.it

Magarpatta is the first project in India in which farmers pooled their land and created a township, rather than selling their land to a real estate developer. Magar, an agriculturist with a politically active family, convinced 120 farmer families about the project in 1993. His immediate family owned over 40 per cent of the land.

SASOL Foundation's insight:

Thinking of building farming community's water and food security, this is a bold and novel idea.  Although this has happened in India, could it happen in Kenya? -tjhb

SASOL Foundation's insight:

Michael Mobbs, an environmental lawyer, wrote a new book called Sustainable Food.  It is interesting to see how he is tackling an issue that the third world struggles with in a first world nation.  His idea of composting in the streets is novel.  There is a review of his book by Foodwise at http://foodwise.com.au/michael-mobbs-talks-sustainable-food-part-two/ -tjhb

Food security weakening "on a scale we haven't seen" - expert

Food security weakening "on a scale we haven't seen" - expert | Kenya Food and Water Security | Scoop.it

CLIMATE AND FARMING OUT OF SYNCH

The essential problem, he said, is that the world’s agriculture “has evolved over 11,000 years to maximize production in a stable system. Suddenly the climate system is changing, and each year it and the agriculture system will be more out of synch with each other.”

In the Amazon, for instance, continued destruction of the forest, in part to feed China’s growing demand for soybeans, appears to be disrupting rain cycles in South America, threatening more frequent droughts and crop losses in important grain growing regions in Brazil and Argentina.

China, one of the world’s largest grain producers, also is struggling with increasingly severe weather, including worsening droughts, and fast-dropping groundwater tables. And the United States just last year saw as much as $200 billion in agricultural losses after a record drought.

Such changes are poised to translate into a deepening of world hunger, Brown said, with the risk that an extreme weather disaster in a major grain-producing country such as the United States, China or India could bring quick and more global famine.

SASOL Foundation's insight:

The communities SASOL Foundation works with have had a change of heart in the last few years after four years in a row of devastating drought.  Farmers are much more willing to try new drought-resistant crops.  Small scale rural farmers in eastern Kenya are going to be better prepared for the next big drought because of our efforts in water and food security.  -tjhb

allAfrica.com: Kenya: Sorghum Farming Key to Food Security - Experts

allAfrica.com: Kenya: Sorghum Farming Key to Food Security - Experts | Kenya Food and Water Security | Scoop.it

"Sorghum is now my main cash crop. The scientists from the institutions test our soils and advise us on the right spacing and farm inputs to use," Patricia explains.

She says they have also trained farmers on the value of crop rotation and the disadvantages of using uncertified seeds from a previous harvest, for planting.

Crop rotation she says helps contain diseases that threaten crop production in the country and thus reversed the government's efforts to address perennial food shortages.

...

Prof Gudu cites traditional crops like sweet potatoes, sorghum and cassava are suitable alternatives to push the country's food agenda to the next level, particularly when the country is grappling with erratic rainfall patterns.

SASOL Foundation's insight:

The fact that sorghum is a good cash crop is reinforced by this article.  It is interesting that this article mentions white sorghum as the higher quality variety used by many beer breweries.  It also takes into consideration the birds and suggests if more farmers grow sorghum, there will be enough food to go around.

SASOL Foundation encourages the farmers and communities it works with to plant sorghum, dolicos lab lab, green grams, among others.  -tjhb
