Five reasons why doing business in Singapore is so easy

Five reasons why doing business in Singapore is so easy | KenDurha | Scoop.it

infozone's curator insight, November 5, 2013 1:01 AM

With a stable political system, low corporate taxes, low rates of corruption, highly developed infrastructure and highly skilled workforce, Singapore is famous as a trading entrepôt and an easy place to do business. Now the World Bank has again confirmed Singapore’s number one status, of 189 countries surveyed, for ease of doing business in their Doing Business 2014 report (http://www.doingbusiness.org/data/exploreeconomies/singapore/). Here we have a look at five of the Bank’s top reasons why it’s so easy to set up and operate a business in the city-state of Singapore.

Starting a business

According to the World Bank, it takes two and a half days to set up and incorporate a company in Singapore, and with the right support it can take even less than this. This compares to a regional average for East Asia and Pacific of almost 38 days; and unlike the onerous minimum capital requirements most other OECD countries insist on, it’s also free.

If you’re thinking of doing business in Singapore, Servcorp’s has a range of business news and articles with lots more useful information to help you make the decision and setup in Singapore.

Getting credit

With a highly advanced legal framework designed to protect both borrowers and lenders, the World Bank scores Singapore in the top three countries in the world for businesses’ access to credit. With an improved credit information system now making it easier for borrowers to inspect data held about them, this represents a slight improvement on last year’s ranking.

It helps that the city-state has also established itself among the world’s top four centres for banking and financial services. According to the Z/Yen Group’s annual Global Financial Centres Index (http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2013/03/26/global-financial-centres-index-13), Singapore now rivals Hong Kong for the third spot behind London and New York.

Getting electricity

The World Bank also scores Singapore highly for ease of access to energy. To get a hypothetical new warehouse fully connected to the grid can all be completed within a few weeks, and at a cost of about a quarter of the country’s GDP per person, compared to an average cost throughout the region of almost 10 times that country’s GDP per person.

New businesses also won’t need to worry about the blackouts that plague so many other Asian countries with such depressing frequency. Power outages are rare, and the city-state is at the forefront of investments in liquefied natural gas (which supplies about 90% of its energy) to secure its supplies for the years to come (http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/singapore/energy-prices-unlikely-to/868400.html).

Paying taxes

Some countries have low taxes but lots of paperwork, some the reverse; Singapore has neither. The World Bank ranks the city-state in the world’s top five for both tax rates and tax simplicity. The Bank concludes that an average medium-sized business in Singapore will have to spend 82 hours per year preparing, filing and paying corporate income tax, value added tax and social security contributions. This compares to an East Asian average of 208 hours, and an OECD average of 175. Taxes are spread across five payments per year (which is relatively few), while at the bottom line the total tax rate as a share of commercial profits averages 27%, beating the regional average of 34.5% and the world average of 41.3%.

Trading across borders

Not for nothing has Singapore been described as ‘the Rotterdam of Asia’ (http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/ceyhan-or-singapore-which-one-to-be-the-2nd-rotterdam.aspx?pageID=449&nID=57039&NewsCatID=429). Along with Shanghai and Hong Kong, these two cities now vie for the (hard-to-measure) title of ‘the world’s busiest port’. Coming top on all measures of cost, time, procedures to follow and documentation to complete, Singapore has maintained its number one spot in the World Bank’s rankings for ease of trading across borders. Quite simply, the city and its port are very much open for business.
